Resole or Replace

I have a pair of Zamberlains with 4 seasons in the San Juans under their belt. I retreat and condition them regularly. I’m definitely not anal about their care and they get used and abused pretty hard. Never experienced wet feet with them and was using them for creek crossings as recent as yesterday.

I’ve been on a repurpose and repair kick lately vs. just buying new gear, so I like the philosophical idea of a resole.

Thoughts and opinions?

Great question. For me, it comes down to economics. I have no idea what the cost of getting boots resoled is, but if it’s half the price of new, there’s no way I’m putting that much into a pair of hard used, 4 year old boots.

Would a resole job fix the rand? If not, I’d take that into consideration too.

Looks like Zamberlan does offer a rand replacement. I haven’t gotten into the weeds of a quote yet as they outsource resoles to 2 cobblers. Looks like pricing starts at $75 for hiking boots, so I’m gonna guess $150 out the door as the cobbler has to custom order the rands from Zamberlan. Boots are $360 msrp.

Only you can answer what its worth to you. I do hate the disposable mentality of our society, and try to fix what I can when it makes sense.

I never pay MSRP for anything, so it depends on what the actual cost that you can get new ones for.

I still stand by my original thought, and that goes for just about anything I buy. If I could get it fixed for half of the cost of new, including shipping etc, I’d resole.

I don't see what you'd gain with a new rand add a bit a of free sole on that cut if it's bothering you. Just get a re-sole and pocket the cash. Another year or two should be worth a 100$ If and when those boots start leaking get a new pair and use those on milder days to save some wear and tear on the new set. Just my opinion

Here are my Zamberlans that I've used for the past 7 seasons. I love these boots. I will definitely get them resoled when they need it, but only because they stopped making this model. Otherwise I'd probably just get another pair. I already have this version in a 10" also, but I don't like the 10" as much.

Resole, have resole a pair of Hanwags yukons twice about to be third, But don’t think the will make to four.

With that said your membrane probably close to giving out.

A broken in pair of boots is gold IMO, worst case keep them as back up. Resole price is a no brainer

I wouldn’t sweat the rand. I’d just trim and or get some 3m marine adhesive and glue them back down

Well broken-in boots are to be treasured. Are these your go-to boots, as in fit really well? If so, and the resole cost isn't too bad (you have to decide that) I would go for it. The only thing that concerns me is the leather breakdown (deep creases) at the forefoot flex point. You don't want to invest in these then have them blow out there in a couple of months. A good boot repair shop should be able to provide some insight if this is going to be an issue.
