New to mule deer hunting this year. I hear a lot about migration herds etc. Has anyone have any experience hunting a legal resident mule deer?

Whether you're hunting resident deer or migratory herds largely depends on the time of year and region that you are hunting. While I have never had a conversation with a deer to find out if it's a local or not, I've often wondered if some of my bucks are just in the area for winter or if they live there year round.

I am guessing you mean non-migratory mule deer. If so, they still have wintering grounds, it is just that they don't have to travel far to get there. I have hunted migratory and non-migratory mule deer for decades. What questions do you have.

It can be done. Still requires a good amount of time spent pre season and the usual amount of luck depending on the hunting pressure. Most "resident areas" at least around my area here in North Central Washington seem to be incredibly highly populated by road hunters
