Most of the people we were around are either retired totally or have passed on.
It takes work and time and full commitment to training hounds. There is no short cuts.

For what its worth, and no disrespect to responsible breeders and trainers out there....I have rarely seen a "finished" hound that was much better than anything I already had when I was shopping, and certainly never hunted alongside one I'd be willing to drop thousands on. I found faults in many of them that i felt made them worth a fraction of the asking price. To be a successful houndsmen you need to be a glass half empty type & see the faults in even your own dogs that others may not see. The best way to avoid those faults is making your own dog from pups, selling "finished"dogs is one way houndsmen pay their bills & guiding hunters with their best dogs is the other........hopefully people can see the confict that arises for a buyer.

I bet I know why you haven’t been successful in running hounds. You will never be successful in becoming a “houndsmen” unless you are driving a Toyota Tacoma with a custom dog box in 365 days a year. Those guys are separated from the normal guys runners hounds and are special . You need a Tacoma…. I didn’t realize this until a few years ago, but every “houndsmen” in western Montana drives a Tacoma.

It was 1998, I was in in my early 20s….I was at a trial and won a bitch class of like 48 bitches.

Anyway the next morning I was running a bitch puppy out of the winning bitch from the day defied with couple guys I knew, she was about 9 months and better then most finished hounds already.
A guy that I used to compete against, who was known to always buy competitive dogs seen her and offered me 10k for her cash. I turned him down. About five minutes after that he offered me 15k. At that time you could buy a national champion for that money.
I tuned him down, and he said “ son how can you turn that kind of money down on a bitch puppy”?
I said you show me where I can replace her for that 15 k and get another one as just good?
He looked at me and and winked and said you can’t, have fun her she will make a champion by the time she is two… ..she fished her championship three times over in two classes.

Hunter Keating. HK hounds. One of the best houndsmen I've ever seen. His finished dog's are likely double your budget though.

No disrespect to you sir, but I think people should know Hunter Keating with HK Hounds is one of the most dishonest crooks in the hound world. I would not recommend buying anything off him. I have been down that road. If you had a good experience with him that's great, but I did not along with many others.

I’m in Va if you want to try a bear dog or 2 come on out I’ll put you in the business..mine won’t take a cat I’m afraid..if they won’t give you trial on a dog or take you hunting with it first I wouldn’t buy it .

I'm into a different type of dogs. If a seller wont give you a money back guarantee trial don't waste your time talking to him. you will be out shipping cost but if the dog isn't what you want its worth it. If you are still looking PM me and i know a few guys I can ask and see what they have. They would be willing to take you out and show you the dog. we cant run cats here that might be a deal breaker for you.

I'm in VA. What kind of dog you running? Walkers? Plotts? Curs? I have a Mtn Cur I got from Bob Ranson 10 years ago. I haven't run with a ton of different dogs but he's still a dandy of a dog. he splits time between coons and squirrels. He's slowed down a bit but still sharp and accurate on the nose, eyes, and ears. I'm currently looking for a replacement

On Topic though. There is a lot of good advice in here. A new dog is always a roll of the dice. Best thing you can do is create opportunity. Wear out a pair of boots chasing a dog through the woods. As I said above, I have a mtn cur and would run curs on bear. My cur is in the 50-60# range. You probably wouldn't want a cur smaller than that for bear or cats. I lucked out and my first dog will be hard to replace
