Rental car info needed

So we have a bit of a hicuup in the logistics for our CO hunt we leave for on saturday. It is a 16 hour drive. I do not have to be back to work until the 10th. Another guy the 21st. But the third guy has to be back by the 5th. We would like to all ride up together and realistically we will all be ready to head home when the first guy needs to leave. But what if we want to stay longer.....

Sending the early guy home in a rental car seems like a good idea at first glance. However i know they really like to stick it to you when you drop the car off at another location in another state.

Considered a flight as well but would rather not go that route.

Anybody gone the rental car route before? Enlighten me please.

I did a rental car last year and it was flawless, but it was both ways. I'm not sure how much more it is for a one way trip.

You could try kayak.com and see if you can find a deal. Someone I know had to be in Florida in January and all the flights were cancelled due to pretty bad storms. The rental agency said the car would be something like $40 a day but would be a $500 charge for dropping it off in Florida. We went on kayak and found a rental for $200 a day but no fee for dropping it off in a different location, so she and some friends made it down in one day and flew back. If he can make it back in a day it might be cheaper with fuel than a flight especially if he’s bringing back meat.

Are you a rewards member with any rental agency? Rent often for work and have come across that $250 - $500 one way charge a couple times. Ultimately challenged it and got it removed, but think that had to do with being a member and renting often.

Definitely call ahead and and ask about it to make sure you don’t have any surprises. Been there too!

It really depends on the specific locations. Sometimes I get hit with an extra ~$100 upcharge when I book, sometimes not. There are rental car offices all over the place, and a google search can uncover discount codes. A hundred or so bucks seems like a pittance to add onto what you might be spending on the hunt.

The charges will vary wildly depending on if they need to shuffle cars towards where you want to drop it off or away. Same goes with moving truck rentals, etc. Some areas its very cheap to move to or away from and vice versa.

If it helps, i've been looking at a oneway rental in the off case I get an elk - its cheaper than flying home with the meat - and Budget Rental Cars doesn't seem to charge the extra fee.
