Remington Mountain SS 7-08

I'm thinking about buying a new rifle and this is one of the options. How is the accuracy in these rifles?

I have the same rifle in .280 Rem and it's ok. It took me awhile to work up a load that shoots well. The trigger is not very good but usable

I didn't know if it would be worth getting for $699 with a 10% off. I like B&C stocks and swap my trigger out on all my rifles. I've never had a rifle that had a thin barrel. Just didn't know how accurate they were.

Where are you getting a new Mountain Rifle for $699 plus 10% off? Cheapest I've seen them is around $850.

Many of my rifles have skinny little barrels, like a #2 taper or so, .55 or .56 at the muzzle, and a few of those have suppressors hanging off them.

Absolutely no meaningful effect on accuracy, or no effect on first shot accuracy, anyway. If you are shooting a PR event then yeah...they are not suitable, they will start to walk shots all over the place. But I love them for hunting and carrying.

The few rifles I have that are around .25 MOA guns are all varmint taper barrels, but I have a plenty of .50 to .75 MOA guns that have sporter or light sporter barrels.

I will say it might be true that it might be *slightly more* likely that a factory skinny barrel might be *slightly less* accurate than a heavier factory barrel. But I think you can buy with confidence. And the one new Remington post-recall trigger I've played with got down to about 3 lbs no problem.

Both are pretty nice rifles...aftermarket stocks and parts are much more common for the 700 Mountain SS over the M7.

I'd get the model 7 & then put a stock from Oregunsmithing.com on it. Depending on how much you want to spend, I have also re-barreled mine with Benchmark barrels at the same time. It produces a 6 pound scoped rifle in short action calibers that will shoot sub-moa 5 shot groups with no barrel cooling like kimbers.

Hummmzzzz. Model 7 is lighter and shorter and just badass. Shorter lighter everything.

But...the aftermarket is pretty thin for them. The trigger housing and bolt release is slightly different from a 700 so you might have fewer trigger options (you also might not need it as the new Remington triggers are likely okay), but I've put a Timney on my M7.

Also, and my model 7 is from the mid/late eighties so they might have changed this, but the rear action screw on the M7 is very thin, really a lot of stuff on the gun is downsized from the 700. Has it ever been an issue, no. Never even once.

I think you'll find that most people with M7's love them.

But you are not going wrong either way. This is win win.

I've got a Model Seven SS in 7 SAUM and love it. It's a 90's model, as well. It too has a Timney trigger. I handled a Model Seven compact black/synthetic in 7-08 with an 18.5" barrel the other day. Talk about a handy feeling rig. Dang it, too many decisions. And I'm not helping things. Lol

When upgrading to Oregunsmithing stock rear action screw upsized to match M700 screw. Also bottom metal gone + trigger guard changed out to further reduce weight. Model 7 trigger works fine after tuned up so don't really need many additional after market parts.
