Hi,

I have a Remington Model 7 in 7 Saum. When I first bought the rifle a few years ago, I had the barrel shortened to 20" and fluted. The original was 22", shot quite well and still does, but with the change in weight and barrel length, it is less enjoyable to shoot. I have considered rebarreling to another 7 saum or maybe a 6.5 prc, however, I believe the coal needs to be under 2.800. The rifle would mostly be used for whitetail, mule deer, maybe a caribou or moose. I like to keep it fairly compact for still hunting, so I would probably stick to 21". Being in Canada, suppressors aren't an option so I would not get the barrel threaded. Thoughts? I reload, so that doesn't matter. I would even consider a wildcat.

My first step would be a Wyatt’s cf magazine for longer coal. I’m sure someone imports them up there

How is this done with a Model Seven?

On the 700 the rear of the action can be opened and the bolt stop shortened. I'm not sure if there is enough room to do this with a Model Seven between the end of the mag box and trigger...it's pretty tight.

I'm not sure, I have to look into it. I too thought everything was pretty tight with the M7. This is actually the first I have heard about it, promising if it does help.

I would say try a new stock. I have noticed a big difference in recoil with a well designed stock and pad.

Also if you aren't shooting very far (500yds+) Then forget about the highest (and longest) BC bullets that need the extra COAL. Plenty of stuff has been killed with 120-140gr bullets in .284" It will also noticeably reduce recoil.

I just ran across a 7 SAUM like yours and that’s a neat little rifle. You could always epoxy some lead shot in the forend for extra weight if that’s what was helping it be more enjoyable to shoot. 1” of extra barrel might not change things much. Great cartridge as is, or use slightly reduced loads to duplicate a 7mm08 or 284. I always thought it was perfect for use as a 284. There’s a lot of model 7 parts floating around so you could buy a different bolt for smaller cartridges and sell yours to come out about even, or for about $200 get the bolt face bushed and a different extractor installed. Hard to go wrong with whatever you do with it.
