Remington 700 help

Hi, I'm 17 and I've been looking for a new hunting rifle. I have used a 30-06 the last few years and it's been a great rifle but now I've decided on a 7mm mag. I want a Remington 700 and I'm debating on two different models. The SPS Stainless and the Sendero SF 2. I know the Sendero is a precision rifle and is really good quality but I have also heard that it is heavy. I hunt mule deer in Southern Oregon where it is pretty open but I also hunt elk in western Oregon where there is thick timber and lots and lots of hills. I have heard mixed reviews about the SPS Stainless but I like the fact that it is lighter. What are your opinions on this? Do you think the Sendero is a good hunting rifle or is it more of a range gun? Do you think it would be a problem packing around? Also what are your opinions on the SPS stainless. If I did get the SPS Stainless then I might consider changing the stock. Do you know of any stocks that are good quality but also light weight? Sorry for all of the questions, but any advice helps!

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see young guys on here! For your uses I think the Rem 700 SPS Stainless would work great. See how it shoots and maybe upgrade the stock some day in the future.

Two of my hunting buddies have Senderos. One in 338 RUM and one in 300 RUM. They are sweet shooters, but not a lot of fun to pack around.

Guys on here really like Tikkas. If your not set on Remington, they are another option worth checking out.

Good luck!

Ok. Nice to meet you. I'll have to check them out. I didn't post this question originally but is there a stock that you would recommend that it lightweight but still pretty good quality?

You'll quickly tire of packing around a Sendero if you hunt on foot... the guys I know with Sendero are shooting bean fields and long draws in Texas. The only carrying they do is from the truck to the stand.

Nothing wrong with an SPS or the 7mmRM for the type of hunting you're doing. Best of luck in your search!

SPS and 7mm both sound great. Sendero is heavy.

I tend to think of Remington's as a bit likel Harley's. In that I means out of the bow is just a starting point for spending more $. Not knowing your budget, I am of the view that you get more rifle out of the box from a tikka or a savage.

people i know with old 700s say they are great shooters. couple folks i know with new 700s have had real trouble getting them to shoot well. Makes me wonder if their quality has went down, maybe something to do with being in deep debt and being bought out by Cerberus Capital Management somewhere around 2007-2008. for that reason my next rifle will be a tikka. very similar in price and guaranteed to shoot 1MOA or less and are very light. Rem has no such guarantee. Rem used to be the best out of the box rifle, i just dont think that is the case anymore.

Savages are known for being out of the box good shooters but so are Tikka's , and they're also known for very reasonable lightweight - there are also many upgrades one can do with the Tikka's one at a time if the budget so dictates - For $699 (current I think) the SS Tikka superlight in 7mm Rem Mag can be purchased at Sportsman's Warehouse and there are rumors of a new model Tikka about to be unveiled in the next month or 2 (or 3 maybe ?)

Ditto's on Savages. If you want to save more then buy a Stevens. I have a Stevens .243 that shoots sub MOA with hand loads for under $400 but I might have just got lucky.

Great post.
Tikka is the best choice when considering Rem700

Brett,

Welcome to Rokslide! I'm not sure what part of OR you live in, but a few of us are going to do some shooting over in eastern WA in a couple weeks. I know there will be a bunch of Tikkas, and some 700's. You're welcome to come up and join us if you would like to try some out.

The sendero will suck in the timber.. not quick enough for elk in the forest.

What WRO said.
Had a 700P, basically the government version of the Sendero, and after one deer season I dropped it like a hot potato.
Too heavy, doesn't swing well, very ungainly.

I hunt both of the hunts you mentioned in oregon. I'd find a 7-8 lb rifle with a 3.5x10-18 on it.

Ok so it seems like the Sendero is out. What are your opinions on the Winchester Model 70 extreme weather SS and the Browning
X bolt stainless Stalker. The reason that I was looking at those was because they seemed to be light rifles with better stocks and barrels than the SPS Stainless. I'm also looking into Savages and Tikkas. Btw I just moved from Puyallup to Beaverton Oregon, and does anybody know any good shooting spots around here. I heard somebody say Larch Mountain in Vancouver and I know there are some good spots off highway 6. Anyway, thanks for all of the feedback! It's been really helpful. Also thanks for the invite Justin. I might have to take you up on that.

I'm a fan of the model 70 Winchester.

For years it was known as the "Rifleman's Rifle". From what I can glean the model 70 is no longer in production so I'd grab it for the action alone.

The recent production Winchester rifles have been some of the most accurate out of the box rifles, with the highest quality in regards to fitment, they have ever produced. If it were me I'd jump on the model 70.

I just wish they had made more left hand models. As for the new XPR, no thanks. If I wanted a Browning I'd buy a Browning.

FYI, the Model 70 is alive and well .... what "Browning" might that be ?

the Model 70 EW is one awesome rifle, a little bit heavier than the current crop of "nearly lightweight" but still a very huntable rifle with an outstanding pedigree - Browning rifles have been, still are manufactured by Moruko of Japan and are very well made and accurate rifles - Moruko began making the BBR then Abolt and now Xbolt and all have been solid performers with good triggers and engineering - I believe the new "working man's" model XPR(?) is also a Moruko but I might be wrong on that - The last I heard Browning and "Winchester Arms" were under the same corporate leadership
Model 70 EW and Browning Xbolt SS with both run you at or near $1000 and at Sportsman's Warehouse you can purchase a Tikka SS superlight for $699 and the only thing you won't get is a 3 function safety, what you WILL get is a well designed accurate rifle that is a solid few ounces lighter - don't pay any attention to the "Tikka naysayers" as they're just jealous that they missed out on a great rifle deal :)
