Thoughts? Both used. I have one on hold but the same dealer just got the Remington in and said I could have either one. Cost is the same. I have not seem the Remington yet.
Just buy both and see how they shoot. I would like both rifles personally, but not wild about taking wood stocks on hunts where the environment can be wet and conditions otherwise hard on stocks. Don't know what the Tikka has, but both stocks can be replaced with aftermarkets if you want fairly readily. I shoot a 300WSM, but personal preference would probably be a 300WM due to just being able to likely shoot the bigger bullets better. Flip a coin or just buy both.
I dont think I could buy both and do not plan on hunting with a wood stock. The Tikka is factory composite. The Rem I think is wood and I would need to replace. I would likely also replace the Tikka to a better quality stock as well but not sure. I would likely due upgrades to both. I am not a mountain hunter but hope to do a few trips as I can. I too would prefer the 300 mag and its really tough to call on this one as I know the 700 bld actions are fantastic but so is that Tikka. I will likely not be able to take either gun out to shoot to see what one is better. Neither are scoped.
IF, the Remmy is an OLDER one, pre-2000 or so, nice shape and excellent throat/bore, I would grab it and run.
Then, as funds permit, install a GOOD synthetic in as style YOU like, a McMillan, Brown, MPI or the original Bansner are all good and although I have no personal experience with one, unlike the others I mention, I hear good things about Manners stocks.
Install a SHILEN trigger as a Jewell is a bit too sensitive to dust, etc. in the field. You CAN have the factory trigger reworked, I have one on my fine, custom UL Mod. 7 "sheep shooter", but, this is a task for an EXPERT.
Get Talley SL-QD mounts and a Swaro Z3 3x9 or 3.5x10 and rock on!
The Tikka already has a good trigger. The action is smoother to operate and built better imo. The Tikka is lighter. You don't have to replace the stock unless you want to.
One more note is that with a .300WSM in a Tikka, you can switch the magazine and load the bullets really long due to the fact that they are all long actions.
If you ever plan on taking it to a smith then the remington. If you are just looking for a rifle to hunt with and at most might put an aftermarket stock then the tikka. I own both rem 700's and a tikka 300 wsm. The Tikkas shoot great And there are more and more accessories becoming available. There are also smith's starting to work on these actions but I think you'll find more willing to build off of remingtons. Now comparing calibers... the 300 win mag will push the 180 plus grain bullets faster than the 300 wsm but if you are planning on running 150-180 bullets you won't see a huge advantage in the 300 win mag
