This one’s a bit random but I would appreciate an impartial third party opinion.

I would like to buy an older REM 700 BDL from a relative who’s getting rid of it but it’s tricky to do business with family - I don’t want to rip him off or pay too much.

What’s a good fair price for a very clean left-hand BDL built in 1980 chambered in 30.06?

And to head off the inevitable questions, I’m already working in the REM 700 ecosystem and it’s working for me. I would like to put this one in the safe and maybe one day use the action for a build.

Thanks!

Go look at Gunbroker for similar rifles and see what they're asking for them. Remington collectors have driven the prices up on everything before the bankruptcy, but at the end of the day, it's just a Remington 700 BDL hunting rifle.

The easiest thing to do is just ask what he wants for it. Make him set the price, period. If you don't want to pay that, then tell him no and give a reasonable counter.

It's only tricky if you make tricky. People make this shit more complicated than it needs to be. In my experiences over the years in everything from guns to cars to real estate and anything else you can think of, the "family price" or "family discount" leads to hard feelings from one party or the other most of the time. Find out a fair market price and work from there. Family has nothing to do with it.

Just to ballpark what i see on my local buy/sell forums, an 80-something Rem 700 goes for between say $450 and $850 depending on how nice/not, comes with scope/not, etc.

I bought a new stainless bdl in 3006 in the 90's and paid about $500 for it. Just so you have a reference of what they went for new.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I am just trying to determine a fair market price. The asking price on gunbroker is not that and that’s why most of them have zero bids …

Just the gun no scope mounts. I would offer between $300-$400. Maybe I am cheap but it seems like something he is not using, needs, wants.

You may need an account to view that ^^

Definitely going for more than I would have guessed these days - of the ones with more than 0 bids, looks like $500 to $900 is kind of the 'going rate', with some examples over a grand for reasons I'm not sure of (a few with extra nice looking wood, maybe some are more collectable than others?)

Anyhoo, there's your par for the course at gunbroker. My general experience is that local sales tend to run a bit less than Gunbroker's averages.

I got $600 out of a black synthetic ADL in 308 this past weekend. If I could buy the rifle you described for that price I’d consider it a deal. Most bdls I see with the wood/blue in decent shape go for $750-1k. Most common in 30-06 so that keeps it toward the lower end

I had a friend over to look at a few shotguns I have up for sale and he offered me $800 for my 700 BDL in .270 unsolicited when he saw it in my safe last week.

Just purchased a left 700 walnut stock bdl last year. Paid 450 for it. It was in good condition. We both agreed it was a fair price. But depending on condition somewhere between 300-700. I would look locally to see what comparable rifles are selling for.

People poopoo on Bass Pro, but they have a used firearm section, you can search by gun, location, caliber etc etc. Their pricing is a lot closer in the used market than gunbroker. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but they ship to your nearest BP or Cabelas, my last 4 purchases have been seamless, and if you buy from a state like West Virginia that does not charge sales tax, neither do you. There is also 10% off Mondays if you have their card............BP used Remingtons easy peasey, and good luck! I like buying from family, gives it "history".

Realistically Remington 700 actions have sky rocketed in price in recent years due to people using the actions for builds. Actions with a bolt on Gunbroker are $500+. So what it was worth new is useless. Unsure of the left handed world because it is a lot slimmer pickins than the normal handed world.

I remember when you couldn’t give away an ADL rifle for $300, now that same rifle is selling for $600.

I don't when you remember that. ADL Synthetics were $319 at Walmart 30 years ago when I ran sporting goods at my local store. I sold them as fast as I could order them in. Marlin 30-30 rifles were $249 with the hardwood and $319 with the Walnut. My Ruger #1A in 7x57 was $649. Damn those were the days.
