Good evening Roksliders. I have a Rem 700 XCR in 308 Winny and a few years ago switched over to a longer bullet (Berger 175gr. OTM) and couldn't be happier with it's performance!!! My trouble is reliable feeding, the COAL is hitting the dead nuts edge of length for the factory typical BDL internal floorplate mag, and I'm tired of fooling with it!!! I would like to know from the "Hunters" out there that have revised their setup to some sort of external magazine system. I need something that can handle a COAL of 2.835" or greater, has a low profile or hidden release, and is of alloy metal construction. For most of the states I hunt a maximum of 5 rounds for a magazine capacity is what is legal and I would like something as low-profile as possible in that capacity. I have looked at the Badger M5 and like it, so something of this style. What are you using and any thoughts and opinions are appreciated . Thank you.

I’ve converted my 700. I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but here are some pictures, and maybe they’ll help?
All metal.
Very easy conversion

For less than $35, look up Wyatt's extended magazine boxes for BDL. The SA MBE allows 2.995 inches.

If you go M5 will need an inlet cut for the bottom of the stock. Most M5 detachable magazines allow 2.95 inches of cartridge length. Based on your description, look at the Hawkins Hunter DM @ $220 + $130 per magazine.

The Wyatt's operation is very knowledgable and accommodating. Send an email and expect follow up with the right solution.

Hope this helps! :)

FWIW a Wyatt’s extended mag box will require some machining of the action. It’s not a lot but it has to be done to make it work.

You need to do a few things to get more OAL and better feeding, the first is to open up the bdl stock to m5 aics which can be done with files and a dremel.

The 2nd thing to do is to notch the feed ramp for VLD bullets. That is plunge with a 1/4” end mill on a mill 1/8 deep so half the cutter is engaged.

Once you get aics magazines you want to buy ones with no binder plate for 0.100” extra coal. Those should get you out to 2.980” or so.

You can save on an M5 by using the magpul bottom metal and doing the inlet work yourself or you can pay a smith a few hundred dollars for all the mods.

These are all standard Remington 700 feeding problems present on both factory and many custom actions. Any gunsmith that does any rifle work should be able to do this work.

On the new remarms short actions they have the ramp already cut/ relieved to accept longer coal.
