Just pulled the trigger on this, as my back country excursions are starting to include my 10 year old son now. I've spent enough days in the alpine where I've come to enjoy a full tent with the bug protection it offers. There's been a few late summer trips in the high country, where the mosquitoes were so bad, I would have left if it weren't for the escape of a full tent! So, I had decided on a tent. Weight and pack-ability were factors, but I think price and durability trumped those in my case.
I'm actually really impressed with this tent. I think with a different compression sack, it will actually pack pretty small. (minus the pole, which I'll carry separately in my pack) It is a little heavy, just a hair under 5lbs., but its huge for a two person backpacking tent. Ill probably split the tent up and let my little guy carry the rainfly or something.
I know its not the latest, greatest ultra high tech tipi or tarp setup, but for 220 bucks, I think it is going to serve as our backcountry mansion for many years! Overall, I am really impressed with the quality of the tent. Definitely a contender for the guys out there looking at something in the 200 to 300 dollar price range!
