Looking to pick up a sleeping pad and was wondering what everyone's experience has been with items purchased at the REI garage sale?

Do they have a return policy?

I got a great deal on a 0° Nemo bag a couple of years ago. Also got a brand new, rental tent for about 90% off one year.

It really depends on the store you go to. I got the best deals at an austin, tx store. Now that I'm in Spokane, wa, you have to get there early or else it's slim pickens.

No returns on garage sale items. I've been going to them on and off for over 18 years. The prices have been going up and up. It was once a great place to get good deals but now the pricing is corporately done. It's worth looking just not what it was.

Due to miscommunication and lack of shared enthusiasm towards getting there early it’s been pretty well picked through by the time I’ve gotten to them however there were still deals to be had. I don’t know that I’d buy a pad but shelter, bag, ground cloth etc I’d go for.

Got an 8 man tent for $10 10 years ago and it just now got replaced. Lots of great car camping memories in that tent.

I will say it is amazing what people feel comfortable returning. Just because a company has a great return policy doesn’t mean you have to use it after you’ve broken and used the heck out of the gear you bought.

Another note, I bought a couple of big Agnes pads for dirt cheap at one of these sales. The return slip indicated they leaked but the still had the repair kit and I figured I could fix them. Turns out, the nylon itself, was not holding air. When I put them in the tub, air leaked out all over through what appeared to be no damage. I never was able to get them to hold air.

Had that exact problem with my Big Agnes sleeping pad. Bought mine from Moose jaw and returned it for a full refund. I now use a Static V and am happy with it

I will add to my original post, if you have the time to fix something that's where the best deals are at. For example, a broken buckle or small rip is usually where you find the deepest discounts with minimal work to get it fixed. Now with the corporate pricing sometimes actual damaged items are priced the same or higher than returns for "doesn't fit."

I will say my favorite return reason I ever saw was, "Really Old."

As said before no returns at an REI garage sale. Sleeping pads and boots I avoid for that reason.

If you do go know what you are looking for and go to that section. Grab what catches your eye making sure to look at the comments on the price tags that say why it is returned so you have an idea what to look for while inspecting it. Then take the pads that your interested in and find a space where you can blow them up, lay on them, and give them a good look over. Once you do that and you see if you got a winner then put the the ones you don't want back and I would double check to see if you missed any.

The other thing that I haven't looked into, even though I mean to, is to see if the actual manufacturer would do a repair on a garage sale item.

I bought an arcteryx hardshell (return reason was "too warm for Texas" lol) and a big agnes inflatable sleeping pad at the garage sale, the pad worked great until I was dumb and put a hole in it...

There are no returns for garage sale items but the tag shows why they were returned so if you shop smart you should be able to get a pretty good deal.

Yes, they do have their own return policy and it changes initially. The timeframe to return is 60 on the old product and outdoor electronics products would be eligible for returns or exchange for 90 days after the purchase. You can call REI on the number: 001-253-891-2500 for other doubts or the procedure to return. You need to know REI Return Policy to return garage sale product.

Can you post a link on that...a quick search turned up nothing.

My local REI has been hunter friendly....

In 2018 they stopped carrying CamelBak because they're owned by Vista Outdoors. Vista also owns Savage Arms, and Federal Ammo. Last time I was in REI they were carrying CamelBak again.

Edit: I just read that Vista sold Savage and Stevens. That's why REI started carrying Vista brands again in 2019.
