Vacation pics are due at work. Headed to wyoming H for deer. I have 7 points, my buddy has 2. Seems G may or nay not be worth the wait. But i can average with my buddy and draw H i think. So i can hunt probably 10 days total. Scouting from upstate NY not likely. So 3 choices. Plan is backpack in. Arrive a day or two before opener, leaving 8 hunt days. Or hunt 10 days midseason, or hunt the last 10 days. Im leaning towards the last 10. My reasons are less pressure, more chance of snow, any big bucks bumped by the early crowd will begin to resurface. Any thoughts. Thanks Tony

If you're definitely backpacking in, I'd hunt the first part of the season. Maybe even go in earlier than you're thinking. Like three days before opening day. More scouting time, less hunting.

Snow at the end of the season could be substantial & move the deer down out of the basins like this past season. Be careful what you wish for regarding snow in that country. I agree with poster above. Go early but be careful about overestimating how many days you can endure hunting up there with camp on your back. It takes a toll on you.

Im getting my first try at hunting this country and I plan on packing in 3 days before the opener so hopefully in doing that I can find a deer I like and tag it opening morning. Thats pretty wishful though. But scouting before the season is a must in my opinion.

Speaking from experience, if you haven’t hunted in mountains before, DONT plan on camping three days before opener. You WILL burn yourself out before the hunt begins. As someone above said, those mountains take a toll on you.

Maybe arrive two days early, car camp the first day and then hike in the next. Glass from the road, talk with people you meet, and relax. Your body will thank you.
