Recommendations for pheasant vest.

I have a pheasant hunting trip coming up this year in Kansas. It'll be on public land so I expect to be doing a decent amount of walking away from the truck so it needs to be able to pack shells and water for the majority of the day. thanks a lot!

I got a Q5 quilomene and have no complaints. Has 2 shell pockets that will hold a box of shells each, a hyd bladder pocket, a handful of other pockets to store other gear and straps to hold a jacket. I can carry plenty of water and snacks for my dog and myself for a day of chuckar/quail hunting.

I have an orvis vest that I have been happy with. It will hold a 2 liter badlands bladder and 2 large waterbottles plus plenty of shells and room for some other gear. I have a lot of friends who have Wingworks vests, amazing vests but they do cost more. Do you have a budget for the vest? It may help with some reccomendations.

I think wingworks is undoubtedly going to come back as the best recommendation across the net. However, they've been closed to new orders for quite a while now with no news as to when they'll be taking new orders. I've been watching thier site for quite a while waiting for them to open orders back up.

Quilomene is usually highly regarded as well.

Check out www.finalrise.com and www.huntredi.com. Both are new companies offering vests in that same price range. I think they both look decent, but they are both new companies, so who knows long-term how they'll hold up.

I really like the looks of the final rise vest, and I've seen the owner post on here in the game bird forum. I just picked up a badlands vest at half off last week or I'd probably be ordering one of the final rise vests. Still might have to next year...

(I think the badlands vest seems well made and will work alright, but I don't think it'll carry enough shells or birds to count on it for full day hunts, and you're pretty much limited to bladder only for water)

I tried several over the years. I hunt western Kansas near liberal and hugoten these days never too far from a truck. Usually walk 1/2 mile to 2 miles at a time and then back to the truck. For short walks to a half day I love the orvis waxed cotton strap vest. Plenty for water and some snacks. Carries ammo and several birds.

if I ran my own dogs or wandered far from my truck I would look for something more. I have a q5 but rarely use it. If I was wondering big miles far from the truck I’d use my Q5 or even a small day pack.

Q5 Centerfire! I've had mine for 4 or 5 years and live in ND with two pointing dogs. IT GETS USED A LOT! I absolutely love that thing. If you go that route, pick up a quilomene pocket for one side. It's easier to get in and out of for fast reloads.

I live in IA and hunt IA and SD yearly. Have had good luck with the Badlands vest. Lightweight but plenty of storage. I like the magnetic shell pouches as well. Magnets are quite strong and have a buckle for a backup.

I run a crusty old blood stained ll bean, it’s good enough, I’m happy to not know what I’m missing with those fancy vests. So I’m no help there.

BUT that huntredi looks pretty sweet!!

I hate the idea of shells flopping around loose, It’s a deal breaker for me, and the front pockets mostly carry debris and hopefully empty hulls. So I could definitely live without them. Running a bullet proof Molle system with that flat shell holder is a slick idea, and 100% American made!! I’d look hard at that one if I was in the market..

I have a browning bird lite vest and Scheels upland jacket. Both do the job. I bird hunt for either pheasants or ruffed grouse probably 30-50 days a year putting on 10+ miles some days. Both do the trick for me. I don't find the need for a super expensive vest. Find one with enough storage for birds in the back

I have a filson tin cloth upland vest my dad gave me 20 years ago. And I’ll still be using it in another 20. Just not a warm weather item though.

I hunt in western Kansas and use a Filson mesh game bag. Usually never away from the vehicles to ever need more than a water bottle though.
