A na v8 is more efficient under load than turbo trucks but dynamic range of turbo trucks is better so if lots of empty no trailer stuff they can really sip. I have a 2.7t chev that has been amazing for 100k kms so far and more than half of those yanking my cargo trailer build adventure pod. But hauling it sucks big block gas as it makes big block power. It sips on unhitched runs and just love it either way. A 5.0 Ford F-150 is more efficient (my buddy has one) when yanking these hunting fishing trailers around and still does respectable unloaded mileage.
The half ton game though still has emissions crap and systems. Top 3 would be f150 5,0 and 2.7tt or chev 2.7t for lowest total cost of ownership imo.
The gasser HD’s don’t have half ton emissions crap except oddly the Dodge Ram has a cylinder shut down system. I don’t do diesels due to needs and emissions crap. Example, watch a Ford 6.7 delete video and look at specs page for base curb weight of same truck gas vs diesel and you’ll see where the extra 935 lbs comes from. Nope. Anyway best gasser HD’s are Ford 7.3/6.8, pushrod port injected super simple. The GM has direct injection and the dodge mds but has maybe best rep on tranny. Oil consumption issues on GM and dodge. Made the choice to go Ford for me and I’m nearly 4500 kms in setting up a xl 6.8 3.73 crew long with the 48 gallon tank to roll primary trailer work and I’ll daily the backup chev half ton for economy and ride.
No other truck or motor combo comes into the equation if you research for say a 20 year truck gamble and lowest cost of ownership. I’ll under work the shit out of the f250 and it should be best bet at the long term for least amount of downtime or costs.
I’m not brand loyal. Just a gear junky who stays on top of truck market too. Happy researching.
