In '21 I got F250, buddy got 1500, another buddy got a Tundra..
Tranny went out 60k in F250
Buddies Tundra got a new motor
Other buddies 1500 6.2 they changed his oil type and are currently monitoring it..probably gonna need replaced.

Stay away from Ford or any LED lights they are not serviceable...1500 for new headlight and 1800 for new tail light...each...
The new tech ain't what's it made out to be.

70's dent side with a resto mod will probably be my next truck...I am done with this new tech crap.

My wife and I were wondering last night, when will leasing start to make more sense?

Cars keep getting more complicated and don't last as long. Seems like if you're buying new, the smart play is to ditch it before the warranty expires. Might as well lease at that point and let the dealership stress over it.

I bought a new Frontier when the current Gen came out. Incredible truck, but all the nanny beeps and sensors got old quick in the mountains. I could only stand having the brakes slammed on me due to tall grass so many times. I ended up selling it and buying the nicest 2nd gen Tacoma I could find. I'm very happy with that decision, and plan on keeping the Tacoma as my hunting rig for the long haul. I love the old school simplicity.

ya I bought mine used. Definitely can’t see myself paying that much for a 1/2 ton. Plus the newer year models they removed some of the nicer features vs the 21-23 year models

I picked up a 2024 Nissan Titan for $ 45k. It had 8k miles. I specifically bought it because it had the V8 and the the reviews said the tech was outdated. I want less tech ! The truck makers need a model that is for people like us, with less tech. I bought a couple GMCs for work the WT models and they didn't even have electric windows or cruise, that's not enough tech. There seems to be no sweet spot.

I was in your position about 6 months ago. My use case is similar, I tow a boat in the summer (6500 lbs) and will probably get into some heavier stuff as I just bought some property that will need some equipment to work over.

Go drive a few now and take some notes. Sounds like you keep your trucks for a while so interior comfort is probably key. Regardless of what anyone tells you, all of the engines aren't without problems/concerns. I say get what you want and take care of it, don't beat on it, and hope to get lucky.

The ZR2s are sick, the front and rear locker are nice, suspension out of the box is good. If you like it, go for it. You can get that model in a 1/2 ton as well. You could also cross shop the AT4X under the GM badge.

I'll say this, most trucks with good tires and suspension are pretty capable rigs for hunting out west. You could buy a 1/2 ton (or 3/4 ton) of your choice, put some good tires, decent suspension, maybe a mild lift and have a very capable unit. Many Fords (non raptor) are equipped with a rear E locker, GM has their G80 lockers available in the non-ZR2s, not sure on RAM.

Two guides I've hunted a lot with out west ran stock trucks on K02s with either Bilstein or Icon shocks. We went everywhere.

I landed on a 2025 GMC SLT 1/2 ton with the 6.2. Before my next trip in the fall I'll do a set of wheels and tires. I'll upgrade shocks when needed. Maybe some bumpers, winch, lights depending how things go.

I just leave my trucks stock. It has lockers and good shocks already. I go offroad, but just to get where I need to for hunting, fishing or towing the boat. You don't need a monster truck for most things.

I'll throw this out there for your diverse consideration. My current truck, 2014 Ram 1500, is getting long in the teeth and is probably going to be sold/given to my son when he graduates and moves on. I've got about 18 months to figure out what I'm going to do... which is probably to buy a 23-25 model year truck sometime around fall of 2027. I'm starting to poke around now. Currently, I use my truck around town, hauling, etc. I don't tow that much - currently just a tandem trailer, which my 1/2 ton can handle, but that's pretty much it, and TBH I've rarely if ever needed more performance. I live in VA and most of my off-roading/hunting takes place out west (for example, I'm driving my truck out to Wyoming next fall). I would like this next truck to be a big step up in capability and comfort and performance from my Ram, which is bare-bones. I have convinced myself that I want a truck that I can grow into, not grow out of - meaning it should have the performance to do whatever I need it to for the next 15-20 years, which ideally is how long I would keep it. I would like to move out to CO at some point, probably a decade from now, and having towing and off-road capability is something I desire. So I'm not just looking at what I would use it for now, but what I might want to do with the truck in the future (like a camper, etc). As such, I am leaning towards a 3/4 ton like the 2500HD with some form of off-road package. I'm currently looking at the ZR2, which gives the 3/4 ton some serious off-road chops and makes the daily ride much more enjoyable because of the unique suspension - basically it doesn't seem like there is much I can't do with that truck. Feel free to throw your thoughts my way and see if there's some consensus advice - 1/2 or 3/4 ton? Don't waste money on capability now that I might need (or not) in the future, or buy more than I need now so I never have to worry about it in the future?, gas or diesel, brands, models, trims... TIA

In a similar situation, my longtime mechanic is a Ford dealership Mechanic and moonlights with other dealership mechanics (Chevy,Dodge,Toyota) they all are saying don’t by anything new. I asked what are their recommendations. Most responded with an f250 diesel between 2013-2019 with mileage under 100k you can drive it for another 300-400k. I have always been a Chevy guy. My present truck is a 2013 1500 4x4 first time I’ve had multiple issues with it. Had to rebuild engine (lifter issue) and other expensive repairs. I know I’m not spending 80-90k on a new one

Another vote for Toyota. They're consistently 5-10 years behind the market on electronics and other tech. Why? Because they stick with what works even if it isn't as "sexy" as others. Hell, they used the same infotainment in the 4Runner and GX460 from like 2009-2022.

Get a rust-free, pre-turbo, Tacoma, 4Runner, Sequoia, Tundra, GX460, Landcruiser, or LX500, and the odds of having issues are much lower than other brands. Not saying you won't have issues, but their reliability is statistically significantly better than the domestics. Their MPG was and still is garbage compared to other brands, but they're willing to sacrifice MPG for all the additional sensors, electronics, and problems associated with "active fuel management" and cylinder deactivation systems. They'll also never win the 0-60 or quarter mile tests, but who buys a hunting or work truck based on these tests anyways?

We've owned a Sequoia, Tundra, two 4Runners, Camry Hybrid, and most recently a GX460. Other than regular maintenance (oil, filters, brakes, tires), none of these vehicles ever had a drivetrain, interior, exterior, or electrical, issue.

We've also owned a half ton Silverado, 3/4 ton Silverado, and a couple F250s. The half ton rusted out so thoroughly that a few years ago I put a water tank in the back to water trees and the frame gave right behind the cab. By that time the rockers and quarters were already gone, but that is regular wear and tear for most Chevy pickups. I got the 3/4 ton because the Duramax is a motor I can work on and is known for good reliability with specific upgrades. Understanding that rust is a way of life with Chevies, I've taken steps to help prevent it from occurring.

The '94 F250 is a 5 speed 460 farm truck, and the drivetrain has been solid. The frame is also hanging tough. The bed and quarters are rusted out, and eventually it may get a DIY or retail flatbed. The Super Duty I owned was a 460 gasser and it was bada$$. However, at that time I was getting 11mpg loaded or unloaded and got tired of the gas bill.

I probably won’t buy new, but I am strongly considering getting an extended warranty no matter what. My brother had a brand new 2022 F-250 that had a turbo blow and his warranty saved him from that, plus one other thing I can’t recall. He bought a 2024 6.6 Chevy 2500 Z71 and either the transfer case or diff (can’t remember which one) blew up and that one got fixed under the manufacturer warranty at 10,000 miles. It’s unreal how unreliable trucks are these days.

The Tremor with 5.0 is a fantastic option. Very capable and proven reliable. One warning tho, it is LOUD. That may or may not be an issue for you.

4/15/2024 I picked up my 2024 Ranger Raptor @ MSRP. 29960 miles later not a lick of problem. It has been to the San Juans twice, towed a trailer through the hills of TN with a lathe on it, the 3.0 twin turbo did it with ease.

I like the locking differential front and back, but never had to use them. In the rain and snow, I like the 4A.

Nostalgia therapy is satisfied by the spirited Sport mode coupled with Baja exhaust. Every time I want to remember to some degree how my 11 second daily driver sounded - the Raptor brings back the smile.

Someone asked me gas mileage - my answer, who cares..

Trust me. Raptors give me a ‘Merica Chubber. My buddies have some, and they are awesome. But there’s a huge price mark up (20k from a Tremor) for nothing I’m really going to use, TBH. I’m not Baja racing. Plus the towing and hauling sucks and I would use that capability way more than the off-roading. The Raptor just looks awesome though. The Tremor looks Lame next to it.

I'm in the minority. My two 4x4's are a 99 Grand Cherokee with 135k on it, owned 14 years so far, and a 2001 Suburban we inherited with 98k on it right now. My car is an 03 Lexus LS430 with 215k on it.

All three would take me to West Virginia and back without a hitch other than I'm approaching oil changes on 2 of them. The thought of spending $60-$80k on a new truck would drive me to strong drink.

Check recall histories. Ford has had a lot of problems over the past few years. 3 recalls I know of with Raptors from a few years ago. Also see if there are service bulletins that are not as widely publicized.

Ford is great at not recalling known issues and sticking it to consumers. Heater blender cores went out like crazy @750 a pop. 5.4s lost cam phasers, electrical gremlins, etc.

The CP4 can grenade a fuel system for sure, and they're a ton of money and time to replace. Still better than a motor though!
