Looking for a good durable saw for breaking down and capping an elk skull, and legs. I have a silky pocket boy currently, but haven't used it on bone. Anyone recommend something else?

Wyoming saw to remove antlers. You don't need a saw for the legs.

I don't pack a saw anymore. I remove the lower leg without a saw and I like the look of a skull mount so I don't skull cap. I do remove the lower jaw, tongue and as much meat as I can before packing the skull. I would rather not pack the saw all season long for hundreds of miles and use it once or twice to save me maybe 7 pounds when I already have hundreds of pounds to pack at that point. Just the way I started doing it and I haven't regretted it yet. If you are set on a saw my dad has used a Wyoming saw for at least 15 years and still going strong. He is hard on stuff so I'm confident it will hold up.

Has anyone ever tried to use a wire saw to skull cap? I keep one in my first aid kit and wonder if it would work. Very small weight penalty.

I've tried a wire saw on dry bone, the one I tested made it halfway through one elk antler before it quit cutting, then broke. I've got an assortment to test, just haven't gotten around to it. I'd recommend either testing them out on some sheds or packing 2-3. They aren't designed to last forever.

Outdoor edge pak saw. I have used it on many bulls and branches. Very lightweight and sturdy.

I have use the silky pocket boy for cutting the skull plate, ribs and legs of a mule deer with no problem. I do not have experience with elk bones. I think the silky pocket boy would do the job.

You want a saw to take care of everything the Wyoming saw is it...a little heavy but where your by yourself doing an elk worth it's weight in gold x5 don't know how many I have done it but is a lot and never a failure.

I can take apart heads down to just the top of the skull with a havalon, so I don't carry a saw. I always have it in my gear at base camp or truck so I can take it in on the second load if I want to go that route. My saw is the WY short saw.
