I am planning a family trip to Alaska in July. We are going to be staying in the Kenai Peninsula for 4-5 days. We're going to do a kayak tour of Kenai Fjords National Park one day, and I'd like to line up 2-3 days of fishing. I have fished the Russian and Kenai rivers before, but ti was 20 years ago, and the guide service I used is out of business.

Should be prime sockeye time in the Russian river the second week of July when we plan to be there. Can anyone recommend a guide? I am only interested in fly fishing. Would like to do a mix of trout and sockeye over the course of the trip if we can.

We met one of the guys from Kenai Cowboys a couple years ago. I would like to go with them if I get the chance.

We fished a little with Ninilchik, they were ok. I'll look elsewhere for myself in the future.

For middle go with Nick Collins with kenai river cowboys. He’s a young guy but will put you on fish. Super educated.

For upper Kenai fish with Mike at kenai river and company. Mike grew up on the river and knows every inch. He’s a stellar guide. You won’t be disappointed. But book early bc he fills up quick with repeat clients. If mike can’t book you he will set you up with someone on the upper Kenai that will take great care of you.

You can find both of these guys on Instagram or Facebook.

I don’t know rokalides policy on speaking poorly about guides and I don’t think it’s appropriate to openly knock someone who may not be able to defend themselves. However, I had a pretty poor experience with one of the small, one man operations, despite being given high recommendation from one of the shops. If I were to do it again I would go with a bigger operation based out of a reputable shop. Just my thoughts.

Mark Wackler and his guides at AK Fishology are top notch and have the sockeye on the Kenai and Kasilof dialed.

Mid July you will be fishing the lower Kenai for sockeye as the second run typically kicks off in earnest between the 16th and 19th of July each year and fishing has remained good through early August the last few years.

The Russian won't have much going on at that time of year as the first run will have fizzled out and the 2nd run won't be there yet.
