Hey y’all, I have two howa superlites in 7mm08. I don’t know much about gun smithing so I’m wondering what I could change the cartridge into. I don’t have anything in particular that I want I’m open to suggestions.

Are you talking new barrel or just rechamber?

New barrel you can pretty much do any standard bolt, short action cartridge.

To rechamber probably the AI version is the best option, maybe 284 win? To go to a short mag like 7 saum or wsm, bolt work and feeding would have to be considered...

7mm08 is IMO the unsung super hero of hunting cartridges. My 20" barrel X Bolt hits terminal velocity at 1000 yards with 162gr ELDMs.

Recoil is not an issue, brass and components are readily available as is factory ammo. Im considering building off my .308 M70 and turning it into a 7mm08.

Yes sir, imo the 7mm-08 is an underrated killer and target round.

if you just have to, get a 284
I'm not sure that would work. The Superlites have a plastic detachable mag and I don't see them list other cartridges outside of the 308 win parent cartridge. They do list a 6.5 CM but nothing in the .284 parent case.

284 case feeds great from standard tikka mags. I have Tikkas in both 6.5-284 and 338-284. Both feed flawlessly.

I'd still check if the 284 win rounds would fed in the Howa. The Superlites can be finicky feeding rounds. A Tikka would make far more sense chambering in 284 since it's a long action and can seat out rounds to gain the 284 Win's full potential. Whereas the Howa Superlite is a short action. It still can be done, but I don't see a person gaining much and could just create a feeding issue.
