Need to go .284 since you are using a shorter barrel the bigger bore will help keep velocity. Plus shooting with a suppressor the tiny bit of extra Recoil won’t matter, and the elk just die better with a bigger bullet.
X2 That's exactly my thought as well.

A quick run of the numbers through QL and a +P 284 with 150's will get you right around 2950.

Nothing against the 7-08, it's a great cartridge they're always very accurate, but the 308 case is rather anemic and even with something like a +P you'd have to step on it pretty hard to get 2900 with even 139's in a 18 inch barrel and IMO a 7-08 would kinda be a waste of a mid or long action.

Wanna bet? You don't have to +P a 7-08 to get good numbers out of an 18" barrel. Those AH's run fast powders for their bullet weights and give you a good bump in speed without going over pressure. That will give you the same boost without having to +P your rifle.

The point is what ever you can get out of the 7mm-08 case (its good, I have one) you can always get MORE out of the .284 win case! So having a mid length action go with the bigger case!

This pretty well articulates my thoughts.

The 284 case will maximize the action. And the 284 is going to have some extra efficiency over the 6.5x284. The 6.5x284 is probably a bit to overbore to be cutting @ 18". The 30x284 with 155 scenars/150 etips is also a passing thought but is probably a bit to far down the looney rabbit hole. Recoil is also a very big consideration but I think the suppressor should take it down below were it's at currently which is a 150 NP @ 2810 fps.

7mm08 running some Absolute Hammers will get you the speed you want out of a short barrel and will kill anything she wants to point it at.

I hadn't considered the Absolute Hammers. Interesting. I've got no problems with $1+ projectiles for killing stuff. Can't justify pounding them into the dirt for practice though. If you use an expensive specialty bullet like that how do you build a cheaper practice load & match the ballistics?

If you’re going short to shoot suppressed go 7-08 or 308. Staying long I’d go 280AI cuz that’s what cool kids do.

My suppressed 7-08 will be as short as is legal as soon as I can get my muzzle devices in hand and pinned. I don’t even care about velocity anymore. I had my 7-08 barrel at 24” as I thought my 18” Grendel would be the right caliber for shorter barreled suppressed hunting and I would like the velocity added. The rifle currently is just inconvenient. I’ll just get closer from now on. I like my hearing and enjoyable shooting better than I like a flat trajectory.

284 win, with a little longer throat. Basically the 6.5-284 Norma dimensions in 284. I went with 7-08ai in my 18” barreled model 7, just because I though that was one of the better options with the very short COAL limitations on the model 7 actions (2.812 will feed in mine). One cartridge I thought hard about for that one is 338 federal, but decided the length was going to hinder that one too much. I think that cartridge would work exceptionally well with a short barrel.

I was going to throw it out there for fun, but ya.... Go for a 30-284. I've got one on the way. Nothing loony about this cartridge! It makes more sense to me than any other 30cal that exists. Often times crazy doesn't recognize crazy though

Once you dial it in with those projectiles, shoot another rifle for practice lol. I don't pound many rocks with the AHs. But, if you want similar ballistics you could always load a lighter projectile to match the speed of the AH. You could use the same powder because the AH uses a powder that's one or two bullet weights faster anyways. Example, 140 AH you look for powders in that 120-130gr projectile class. So, you could make a practice load with similar velocity, then do a final sight in and go hunt with the good boolits.

Where did you find dies? And who's building it or who has a reamer?

I am having my Tikka rebarreled be Brad Stair in Utah. He's kinda well known for his Tejas wildcats and some LE rifle building. He actually has a 30-284 reamer.

Got a set of rcbs dies from from Graf's. A couple months ago, I think they had two in stock. Now they're down to a set of Redding dies that is on sale for $150. I think I got my Lee factory crimp die from fsreloading.com

6.5x57, got bullets, got brass to neck down. And she’d have the only one in camp. 😁
Unless I build a lefty to match this, any of these will be the only one in camp. :)

She's used a 260 to kill a bunch of stuff before the 6.5 Creedmoor became so popular. Was always funny seeing guys ask what rifle she used and them having no clue what a 260 was.
