rear shooting bag

As others have mentioned there are tons of items in my pack I can ball up and stuff under the butt end of my stock...however, there are plenty of cases when I drop my pack to crest a ridge or climb up a rocky knoll where I ultimately end up shooting from. I run a Harris 9-13" bipod, which, unless you are shooting uphill, will cause the butt end of your rifle to "float" even on the lowest setting (9")...In these situations I have found the Triad Tactical "Down Under" support invaluable. Weighs less than a few ounces and while prone I have shot past 1,000 yds on steel with ease. Similar idea to how Ryan Lampert uses his sitting pad folded in half when he shoots. Have one on each of my rifles, too light not to.

Bumping this... what is the lightest material you could make a rear bag out of? Dyneema is great, but it doesn't stretch well. Cordura is a little heavy. I'm thinking a 30d Silnylon would be really good option. The EXO Stash Pocket is about the right size and could be filled with some sort of soft goods (extra socks or dry wipes).

I just use an old liner sock filled with spexlite.

I'm thinking a 30d Silnylon would be really good option. The EXO Stash Pocket is about the right size and could be filled with some sort of soft goods (extra socks or dry wipes).

@hereinaz just posted a link to his 2.5 oz rear bag thats on sale right now. Im going that route after years of using my lid.

Here is 1.6 oz Hyper D ripstop (.4 oz) vs. 500 d Cordura (1.1 oz).

This is the webbing/hardware we add (.2 oz). With Cordura and our standard fill level, sewn up the bag is 2.4 - 2.6 ounces (max). Waxed canvas is a little heavier because of the wax.

Subtract out the difference in fabric weight and you are at about 1.9 ounces for a Hyper D bad the size of our 2-5 in Cordura.

I don’t like the shifty feel of sil poly or nylon for gear. You are right you need to have some substance to the fabric. I think this treated Hyper D is the best compromise.

As for making it a stash pocket, to fill with something else, I hate zippers, lol. I personally would make it a draw string type bag because it would weigh less than a zippered bag. And, I actually have this exact thing, because I keep my game bags in a drawstring pouch, which others could easily use as their rear bag.

I can use it, but I don't like having a variable "fill" inside the bag. Once I get long range, I want consistency.

Ultimately, for me, the weight of the fill is almost inconsequential so I just don't think about anything else but a dedicated bag. Also, I hunt with others so if I used my game bags, then my rear bag now needs a sock or two. I don't need to cut tenths of an ounce for that. I will eat an extra few gummi bears at the trailhead if that is the case, lol.
