Rear end shot

Never thought I would shot an animal in the a$s, but the shot presented itself, and I wanted the shot before being busted. It was instant death !! The bullet traveled all the way to the lungs, and blew out the entire side of the animal. Like the pressure of the guts exploded outwards, and left a gapping hole. Literally guts hanging out the side with a blood explosion. Bang flop. No running, no tracking, just death.

I'd certainly do it again, with out hesitation.

Never have, never will as the first shot. As a follow-up on a wounded animal yes. Simply don’t need an animal this bad, with a high probability of failure. You hear about the success of this shot, but never hear the failure story. Does not sound too ethical, yeah I took a shot at his ass and lost him. Hmmmm really tell me more.

Not a high probability of failure with a straight away shot. Folks just put a stigma on the shot that they can't get over.

I’ve gotten a few doubles on hogs with the Texas heart after the first rings. I also killed my first turkey through the fan as a kid.

But i hate fielding dress a deer that i shot in the bow or stern.

This bullet traveled from the rear ham, all the way to the lung, and found in the hide just before the shoulder. Never imagined how deadly this shot is. No tracking, no lost deer, nothing.

I sent an arrow up the tail pipe of a whitetail once, follow up shot, arrow buried to the nock, blood sprayed immediately and the deer was done in seconds.

Shot was from the ground and I would do it again!

Questions. I just don’t know, but am willing to challenge what I believe/have accepted.

What was the cartridge and bullet?
Do you think the results will replicate?
What was the effect within the animal that blew the guts out?
So the bullet went through the ham, the edge of the guts (close enough to blow it out) and then to the vitals?
Was the shot at an angle through the animal?
What if you made a shot perfectly in the middle through the gut more and missed the ham?

I have no doubt that arrows and bullets will kill from all angles. I would use it in follow up shots.

It’s challenging to the common wisdom, and I am open to hearing more. What are the limitations and cautions with the shot?

Are guts really that hard to shoot through? What does it take to get through them?

I rarely do it anymore with deer ( that doe just presented herself square to me and huffed at wrong time)

A bullet in coyotes / hogs etc is always better than watching them run away scotfree.

Older I’ve gotten and more i bowhunt, would rather watch the deer and see it go, then test my luck with them jumping string or quartering either way and praying my broad head made it far enough into the cavity to tear the pump house/ vitals up.

As a follow up shot, it certainly will dispatch the animal to quick.

It is nice to hear about folks who would pass an animal due to a different shot other than standing still broadside.

You arent gonna take a tx heart shot w 223/556 but can with a heavy bullet. Very effective.

How heavy of a bullet?
Is it velocity dependent?
What are the possible downsides/bad results if the shot isn’t good?
Where is the aim point?
What’s the difference if it hits ham first or up the rectum to intestines and guts?

I would take them on coyote and pigs.

We always had enough gun to go all the way thru.

Lot of guys i grew up with would aim for the hip/spine. Drop em, then kill it w another shot.

Were a lot less animals back then. Folks would get a deer every 3-5 years, they didnt play when opportunity knocked.

I can see a hip or spine shot being incapacitating. Not against that.

In 40 years of hunting I can think of two deer that I harvested by breaking the hip with the first shot. ‘‘Twas the only shot I had in both instances and worked well. Both required a follow up shot

Seen it first hand on a bedded bull. 300WM - 100 yards w front and rear support and tons of time. Bull never left its bed and was dead within 10 seconds and there was massive bleeding.

I am still not huge fan of it but was very effective and the environment was very controlled.

Actually, thinking about it now, I may like it more than some of the offhand shots that get taken all the time.
