realistic velocities for .223 88 eld?

223rem with the 88&90s looks like .230 freebore would be ideal. 169 freebore bullets are seated to deep. These are pics from the urban riflemen smith with the 90vlds bergers touching the lands with his reamers. First pic is 169 freebore second is 230 freebore

I have been using these in my tikka 6.5creed and tikka 223 and they have worked perfect. over 100rnds in both no issues


I have been shooting 75gr eldm and 147gr eldm in them as well as pmc x tac green tip 62gr 5.56

Thanks for the link! I’ve been running waters but these look great and they’re cheap compared to other options.

What is the major gain from .169 to .240? The challenge I saw was are you hand loading or single feeding. Due to magazine le gth restrictions I found the 223 wylde freebore to be enough to seat out for typical magazine. Most magazines on the long end are 2.5 and 2.55. For reliable feeding you need to seat them back a little under the max coal of the magazine. Thats my thoughts. If we are trying to get more powder capacity I think you need to just go to 22 gt.

I can’t answer, as I’m currently debating what to do. But the Waters magazines solve for single feeding the long loads.

Yes sir. I have a wylde chamber which i believe is .169. My 88s are 20 thousandths off with a coal of 2.505. This will work in some aics mags or the waters and mountain tactical or nd magazines. If you go longer you're restricted to certain magazines. If you ever plan to run aics the longer throat will not provide benefit. But how much benefit do you actually get with the longer throat? I would argue a 223 build is not for speed. If you want more speed there are other options. If I did .240 id be 2.576 oal that would be close enough to the end of my magazine (2.6 coal) that is could cause things to bind up. 2.6 is veery long for a 223. You'll find out why very quickly why that catridge was designed for a coal of 2.25. Long 223 magazines are not fun to load. The shoulder has to go past the feed lips making it challenging to load.

Good info. As a note, I was under the impression the Wylde freebore is around .0619 while the 223 issf was 0.169”.
 
Seating the .223's with 88s out to 2.5 OAL running AICS style mags, I can push about 2650 easily with 24.3ish grains of Staball match, 26 inch barrel. Im gonna try NAS3 cases though to see if I can get it up there safely since they have more case capacity.
