Got a 21" 1-7" .223 barrel coming for the Tikka. The idea is to feed it 88's and kill stuff. Up until now, I've been shooting 75 amax over Lever out of a stock 1-8" Tikka tube, at 2900. I haven't messed with anything heavier in the .223 before, so I really don't know what sort of velocity I should be looking for. Maybe 2650-2700?

we shall see. I like how Lever meters, but I might try some H4895 to see if how it does, while being more temp stable.

If you don’t already have one You will probably need a mag that offers a longer coal than factory to get the 88s seated far enough out to get enough powder in the case. Along with a lot of freebore.

yup, got that covered

Ran a pressure test today. Virgin Lapua brass, 450 primers, H4895. Bullets were all seated 0.050 off. Just one round per powder charge, with the idea of seeing where things pressured out. I was pretty surprised at what I found. Gotta be careful with the Tikka- it handles pressure way better than the 700s I've messed with. No way I'm going to be running things this hot, but the cases look good.

I agree- the numbers are stupid. I don’t know what the actual freebore is, but it’s not as much as I would prefer for these bullets, to be honest. I really just ran the test to see how the bullets would go. Now I see I can drive them faster than I should! The question is, what’s reasonable?

Youre a good 3 grains over Hornady book max

Op, you said it, the numbers are stupid. Pressure is way high. I'm not sure why there's any need to post, it's a classic case of needing to reduce the charge. I don't understand running a ladder that goes over a book max, even when comparing a number of loading manuals and data. It's been said many times. If you need more velocity, get a bigger case and run a safe pressure. And you don't need to hear it here, it's anywhere on the internet unless folks are just ignoring physics.

How compressed are the loads with the 88s, at what point did you start crunching powder, didn’t see a coal or searing depth posted.

Maybe he was just showing with some guns you can be way off from where you think you are if you are waiting to physically see signs of pressure? Almost a warning of sorts.

I have not loaded 88s but if he is running with 24ish with the 77s, that’s not even really that high depending on where he is seating it, which seems very shallow if he is .050 off in a tikka .223.
