Rangefinding Binoculars

Do you require ballistics?

If so, the Revics are probably the best option.

If not, the Geovid R’s are probably the best option.

I'm not sure yet. I haven't had a chance to use a pair without ballistics.

I'm a pretty low-tech guy and definitely won't use most of the features, buts it's pretty cool to get your corrections in the optic.

For western backpack hunting style shooting, it's fantastic having the come up and base 5 or 10 MPH 90 degree wind correction with one click of a button right there in your face in real time. Saves a TON of time in the process on timed drills simulating some hunting shot scenarios.

Think about the time it takes from getting pack off and getting setup for the shot (potentially while the animal is moving). A high level and WELL practiced hunter can have landmarks identified for finding animal, pack off, position built, round chambered, safety on, scope dialed for elevation, and face on stock/thumb on safety ready to kill in around 20-30 seconds (most folks it's WAY longer). While not all shots are like this, as lots of times animals are found while glassing on a tripod and pack is already off etc, the process can actually take longer as folks dick around getting their gun ready.

How much has the animal moved in that process? Likely zero yards, but also likely, 100+ yards... A final confirmation range from RF binos with ballistics solver, without having to fully break the position and check a hard dope card or some app of some kind on a phone (or lock screen of a phone like we used to use), saves time and keeps you ready to shoot.

It you don't need ballistics id go Geovid R. I originally had furys but found a deal on the geovids and thought they were an improvement optically. Leica now has a 10 year no fault warranty which also makes them more appealing as all electronics eventually will die. Where it's gets confusing is if you want onboard ballistics there doesn't really seem to be a consensus.

Is this true? Mine are brand new and I think says 3 or 5 years.

I would counter that the distance most people are (or should be) shooting at animals can simply use wind brackets and quick drop, and thus don’t need ballistics.

I’m not saying it’s a bad idea to have them. But the cost goes up significantly to get great glass + ballistics.

The Geovid R glass is noticeably better than Revics but still 50% of the cost. You just give up ballistics.

I moved the R’s because I won’t shoot >600 yards on an animal, and quick drip and wind brackets work fine at that distance.

As long as they were built after 1/1/21 you should be good. And if you aren't sure you can call them with your sku and they can look up date of manufacturing

The 10 year passport(no fault) warranty is in addition to a 30 year manufacturer warranty too

Interesting! I did not purchase mine through an authorized dealer but directly from Leica through ExpertVoice.

One would assume that would still count. But my paperwork I swear said a much lower time frame. I’ll have to go back and check

If it's fully transferable and no receipt or warranty registration required I'm not sure how they would deny you if it's a genuine Leica product unless it's something odd like you bought it on eBay with a European sku or something like that. I think this warranty came into place pretty recently so literature in the box might be outdated vs what's on their site.

Thanks for all of the input already guys.

I'll have a lot of options to consider. I doubt I will ever shoot at an animal at 600+, but I certainly like the efficiency for target shooting.

Yeah exactly. I don’t need to wait for a computer to tell me that I need to dial 3.6 mils at 560 yards. Ballistics solvers are for 700+ yard shots.

I didn't think they were any better optically, just had the new location feature. They sure are not noctovids.

Can anyone compare the Geovid R glass to the Geovid Pro glass? Is there much difference? How about in hand feel? I tried the Pro's at Sportsman's and they felt very large in hand, as I'm used to different sizes of Pures...

Been running the leica geovids for about 20 yrs. First pair through hell and back, as I hunt country that is always wet. After about 12 yrs sent back to leica, long story short they replaced them under warranty. Glass has always been awesome🤙 They asked me what I did with them and replied, “I’m not bird watching that is for sure”🤣 Always considered them one of my best investments to adding to success when needed.

I have not tried the Pros, but I’ve heard they’re very slow to return range/ballistic info.

I personally and I may be crazy but I prefer the new R’s over 2200, 3200 and pro glass wise, egomaniacs the HD’s hold better but not by enough to cause a must have.

I prefer the GPO 10x40 over the R due to size, weight, and only slightly lessor glass. Significantly lighter and smaller.

The GPO’s pair well with aziak bino clamp

As far as speed GPO’s are really fast, especially against any ballistic solver, R and them are close but think GPO is faster

Last fall, I upgraded from the latest Geovid R to the Geovid Pro. This was primarily due to ergonomics.

The Geovid R glass compares very well to the Swaro SLC, which I use as my standard. Anything less than SLC and I'm disappointed (yep, I'm spoiled). Anything better than the SLC is nice to have but not necessary for my hunting. I never had the opportunity to side-by-side compare the R to the Pro.

The Geovid Pro isn't slow, IMO. I'm still getting used to on-board ballistics, but usually the correction is displayed before my brain has fully computed the accuracy of my range. I appreciate the simplicity of the display, rather than having a lot of information on the screen. I'm only hunting to 500 and target shooting to 800, so the elevation correction is very nice to have, if not necessary. Wind bracket is simple to these ranges. I supposed if the display gave me a reminder of my wind bracket, that would be nice.

I planned to go with Swaro EL TA, since I'm collecting Swaro glass, but after using both side-by-side in elk camp, I preferred the ergonomics and the display of the Geovid Pro.

To my eyes I think that's an accurate assessment. My son's both have the newer Geovid R's and have been very happy with them. After having all 3 generations of the El Ranges and many Geovids I'm still happy with my 10 year old Geovid HD-R's.

The wiser sparrow bino clamp is on my geovids. I love that thing I was t sure how I’d like it after using the outdoorsman for the last few years but I’ve been happy with that clamp
