I wouldn't get a Nikon. I sold mine cause I thought it was junk. My 7 year old Nikon is better than the archers choice I had.

Id try to get a decent unit, I don't know what I will try this year, probably vortex.

Take a look at the Leupold TBR 1000i.

I have used several Nikons, The best was the old Monarch 800 - but it would not do cuts. My rifleman 550's were OK and did the cuts fine. The Leupold is a huge upgrade and IMO is much better than the current Nikon offerings. It is very accurate, repeatable, has a great optic, ranges stuff all the way out to 1000 like it should, has a bow mode that's good out to 100 (would prefer more, but it will still give you the angle). The red display inside is awesome in low light and has 3 settings for brightness depending on ambient light. Nice small package that fits well in your hand too.

I'm very happy with it and I HATED the original Leupolds like your RX-IV. They SUCKED - especially for archery. The engineer argued with me that the program was correct - she did not understand the way bowsights worked so she was all messed up. It was up to 4 yards off which as you know does not cut it for archery. They finally got it right with this one.

I just got the Vortex Ranger yesterday. I wanted the same thing as you, something simple wiith angle comp that can be used for bow and Rifle hunting/shooting, at a middle of the road price. This ranger fits the bill perfectly.

I had an old bushnel forever and got into long range shooting and needed more. Got the Leica 1600 and love it. It's so small and fast. The glass is awesome too. I've bounced it off rock faces past 1800 yards and it goes as close as 8 yards I think.

Due to just terrible, terrible experiences with Leupold RXIV rangefinders, I haven't given much thought to the newest 1000TBR. I think I will have to reconsider after these posts.

I have one of the older Leupold RX1000 and it is was a good 400yd max rangefinder. Sent it in to Leupold and they replaced it. In the mean time, I picked up a Bushnell 1600 and have been very happy with it but it is a little bulkier.

Just got the vortex ranger and am very happy with the quality of glass and once you set it up ( angle or line of sight) and adjust the brightness to your liking it's very simple. Used it side by side with my Nikon (6yrs old) and can't believe the difference in low light and the illumination is awesome. I looked at a lot of brands and it was between the leupold tbr1000 or ranger and the ranger is a lot simpler.
