Raised bed gardens?

Wife loves gardening and I enjoy it most of the time. Mix of each philosophy. Tubs are for over flow… Planting potatoes today in MT. Almost done with raised bed prep. Garlic is coming in nicely our 3rd year doing it. Works well to burn up chicken manure/bedding, but we still buy a good bit of compost and I grab a few buckets of word castings from buddy farmers a year.

Raised beds are 4x12 rough cut pine so full dimension lumber from a mill 20 miles a way.

Still a good month out from last hard frost historically, hope to put some peas and Cole crops in though

We just got 3 more beds but for us down in Florida, it’s a little late starting most things. We been doing this for 2.5 years now. Each year you learn more and more. It’s definitely harder than it seems. You have to keep going though. Whatever zone your in do the research to find the best vegetables that will grow. And for me making a raised bed from wood or buying one could roughly be the same price. I got the 3 beds that are 3x6x2 and it was only $60 per bed. Also another tip other than getting the right vegetables is companion planting. It will make a difference especially in a bed where you have a lot of space. Another tip is growing an easy vegetable first. Like for us it was okra and peppers since they like heat. This past winter we did a full bed of potatoes in our 2x8x2 bed. They look great and maybe we have another 30 days or so before we can harvest.

Raised bed seems to be all the rage these days. I have a traditional in-ground garden and am not sure how raising it would make it any better.

I get a bowl of strawberries every other day. My broccoli has yielded its first heads. The cauliflower is a little behind. The onions are almost ready. The first tomatoes are showing up. Cucumbers, squash, zucchini, eggplant, green beans and potatoes are growing well, but still a ways off from producing. My blackberries aren't happy. I gave them a fertilizer spike a few days ago. We'll see if that helps.

Been a weird year here in Idaho. Supposed to get down to 28f this week. Not ideal for gardens....
Same here in Montana. We start inside using shelves on wheels and grow lights. Everything pretty much is started from seed. As the plants get a bit bigger, we bring them in and out to strengthen them and get them used to the sun and wind. Then after the last frost they go into the ground. It's work, but worth it. Store bought veggies suck.

I’ve been busy this year getting setup for raised bed & greenhouse gardening. Our struggle in the past has been with Wildlife. It’s a start & a work in progress. Wife & Daughter are busy & enjoying themselves . Learning as we go.

Good Dirty Fun.

Use straw bales. When they're done, they're well on their way to being compost.
