I mostly live and fish in South Florida, but spend a lot of time fishing and hunting in Louisiana and elsewhere. Inshore, offshore, creeks, and rivers. Hours of running in the Marsh. I have Simms of a many variety, both Goretex and Toray. The Goretex has all failed me, and I haven't appreciated their explanations when I provided feedback. Next. Don't have a lot of hours on the Toray bibs, but so far its been fine. This can be had much cheaper on sale. I use these in Florida where it does not matter.
I've got Sitka kit, mostly of the fancy pants duck hunting variety, but construction should be the same as their other lines. My rain gear has been flawless, and that is preferable where we use it. Pretty dangerous conditions considering the remote nature of our ventures. That said, its very expensive, and their warranty is still a bit of a question mark to me. I've had both clients and friends that have had issues with their rain gear, earlier generation stuff, and they were required to send it to some place that handles the warranty work for Sitka. The response sounded similar to Simms. Hopefully that has changed. I don't wear this in Florida.
All of my Patagonia shells have failed. The interior falls apart or they saturate. Patagonia fixes this, and with that, I am a happy customer. Maybe I am just unlucky. I wear this everywhere, Florida to Wyoming.
Colombia, haven't had a single issue. Best part, I buy these jackets on sale for $60 or so retail. Cant have too many rain jackets for friends and clients. Are they breathable? I honesty cannot say. I don't really think any of them are, at least with the humid conditions we normally experience. These typically don't have a "liner", and can be a little sticky. Mostly used fishing in Florida and Louisiana.
Mountain Hardware, which I believe is owned by Colombia, has also been great. These typically have a liner, and are comfy in most conditions. I use these everywhere.
I've got a variety of mountaineering/hiking brand stuff. I generally consider it too nice to keep in a hatch, so it doesn't see that much rough use, but its all been good. Marmot, OR, Arc'teryx ect.
Most of us on boats all agree... Goretex and all that mess is not reliable. Rubber is. A lot of guys run snowmobile suits and heavy ocean rated sailing gear. This stuff is expensive, very expensive. Not packable.
So to wrap up, I don't think spending top dollar on packable rain gear is a worthwhile expenditure. As you can tell, I, for whatever reason, really like jackets. When I am packing rain gear as a "just in case", I always grab the cheap(er) stuff (lets face it, the average person would probably think $60ish for a flimsy rain coat is ridiculous). I think my boat bag currently has a Colombia rain jacket and set of Northface packable rain pants. My truck has a Mountain Hardware, it looks cooler. My boats in Florida have the Simms Toray bibs(cheap on sale, lighter) and rubber Grudens(reliable, heavy). If I am in the mountains, I wear a high quality shell, and its mostly stays on. Duck hunting and fishing in the Marsh during the winter, I wear the Sitka. As for sound, I've never really concerned myself with this I guess. If its raining, always figured the rain was pretty loud.
