Rain gear as full time gear

Is there a jacket out there that is quiet enough to use full time? Looking at options for next falls elk hunt I am planning. Trying to keep expenses down somewhat, but still will spend the money on quality gear.

Would hurt less to spend money on one jacket vs 2 jackets os my main thing. If all else fails I have decent rain gear in earth tones but they are loud.

Depends on what you mean by 'quiet enough'. If you're talking bowhunting and being within 50 yds. or less, probably no rain gear is quiet enough. On the other hand, I feel my Kuiu Yukon is pretty quiet for rain gear, at least compared to some of the rain gear from years ago.

Yes sorry, I have bowhunting in mind.

Sylogear rain gear. I think its similar to c4e. Brushed exterior should be quite jacket has pitzips which is a must if wearing full time. The jacket is on sale right now.

By "spend money on one jacket vs. two" I assume the second jacket would be a soft shell? I personally don't use a soft shell anyway. Merino base layer, thicker fleece or merino mid layer, puffy jacket and rain coat are the only tops I bring. The rain coat only comes out if I need a wind block or water protection. In either case noise isn't as big a factor since the wind or rain tend to be noisy anyway. Just my take. Your hunting style may be different than mine and could require a different set of gear.

That does seem like the most logical route to take. Definitely will look into those options. Already have the lightweight merino base and mid weight merino covered.

I bought a set of Kryptek Vellus gear for my everyday all the time set, rain/snow/shine. I haven't had a chance to get it wet yet but it is comfortable and quiet. To quote the companies propoganda "Windproof, Waterproof, Seam Sealed and highly breathable our laminated innovative fabric will change the way you think about fleece. " There are ongoing reviews on this site that look pretty promising. When I have had a chance to test it a bit more I will add my two cents to those posts.

In my experience when you need the rain gear it is loud out already. The rain makes for some noise. So that helps to cut down on noise I think.

Most rain gear is a consumable item in my mind, just wearing it and rubbing on brush wears down the DWR on the face fabric. While you can find rain gear comfortable enough to wear all the time in some conditions I still don't recommend it as you will shorten the usable life of your rain gear immensely.

I wear a water resistant wind shirt most of the time and just rely on a poncho for the very occasional rain, if I lived somewhere wetter again I might rely on something really disposable like frogg toggs even though I have lots of high-end shells.

It really depends on the use. You can get brushed fleece that is water proof and quiet. You will pay a weight penalty for it though.

Tried and true by thousands for years, cabelas mt050 goretex. I run the bibs and jacket. Quite and bombproof. Had my last set for 4 years and I pulled the sleeve stitching being an idiot. Called cabelas and told them and they sent me a brand new jacket and bins, even though I caused the damage! They make no noise and can easily be put on over boots. Sold for life

my Sitka raingear is pretty quiet. mine is in the forest pattern and has a brushed inside that is nice and quiet. odd thing was, some of there rain gear at the store did not have the brushed inside.

Why would you want to wear a rain coat all the time? Depending on the temp. you will be as wet on the inside as on the outside, rain clothes don't breathe, don't care what manufactures say, they just don't. I use a 3 way system, overcast with slight chance of showers, reg. hunting clothes with cabalas light wt. packable rain gear in my day pack. They are good for on=off shower conditions. If it's going to be mostly rain all day then heaver rain gear, then hunt real slow but swet will still build up inside, I just try to keep it at a min.

That's exactly what I do. Merino Wool Base Layer, Merino Wool Mid, Puffy Vest or Jacket, and my Rain Jacket to go on the outside. The jacket cuts the wind and allows the insulation layers to do their job and contain the heat. If it's really cold I will add another wool layer. Works from August-November.

By wearing my rain jacket, it forces me to slow down to keep from overheating and sweating too much. Of course it's rarely worn in the early season but as the temps drop later in the year I wear way more.
