I waterproof what's in the bag and don't take a cover (in Colorado anyway).

i use the same one on my longhunter & it fits perfect

Ziplocks and drybags for stuff in the bag and you won't have to carry a cover.

The pack doesn't get soaked and heavy like you're thinking. Sure it would get a little heavier, but it won't get sloppy. Its compressed

It will not be like a cotton t-shirt, the pack sheds a ton of water. I only cover it if I'm done for the day and it is pouring rain and my pack is in the elements otherwise if I'm hunting I do not worry and let it get rained on.

I use a Mountain Hardware pack cover. The large fits both my Kifaru Longhunter and Eberlestock J-34 although it is a bit large for the J-34 unless I've got it loaded with spike camp duffle. http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Pack-Rain-Cover/OU4060,default,pd.html
