Raccoons Raccoons Raccoons

Duke DPs for me too. Good value for the money. Gang set because coons often travel in groups. Make sure the spike isn't frozen into the soil so the trap can pull free to help prevent pull-outs. Put plastic tubing (gas line) on the trigger to make it feel like food instead of metal. May have to heat the tubing to soften it so it goes on easier. I baited with marshmallow on the trigger, a bit of canned mackerel below, and some honey/molasses/anise on the lip. Use the honey/molasses/anise as a trailer if needed. If at a corn feeder, just use corn and the honey/molasses/anise.

'nuther one this morning...

I use Duke dp and or what's on sale at Rural King. Cheap, small dog food with a generous splash of liquid smoke is my go to bait. I put a small pile out in front of the trap and only bait to the top of the trigger.

Got 2 more this morning. Out of the 20 or so I've caught this year, I got my first sow.

I wish I lived closer, I have a 2 year old Leopard hound that loves to hunt and tree.

What’s the best, easiest thing to use for bait in those duke dp’s? I’ve never used em but am gonna pick up a few . Marshmallow, tuna, dog food?

Great tips here especially on the spike hole. Drill it out or just bore it out with the stake if there’s a chance of freezing.

We never have, but if you’re having trouble with them freezing it’d be worth a try. Maybe some silicone spray?
Primary problem is the cat food bait getting wet, swelling, and freezing the ring in place. Saw a tip on that CCO channel to just lay the trap flat on the ground at end of chain to reduce moisture inside.
