Sleeping bags keep you warm by "LOFT". When you are lying in your bag you are compressing the insulation so there is NO LOFT. That is why Big Agnes makes bags with no insulation on the bottom and puts it all on top. Same with a quilt except there is no bottom. More freedom of movement with all the insulation on top. Only issue with a quilt is no hood but a hat fixes that.
