Quilt benefits

Yep and yep. I used a 20 degree quilt this year with a x-therm pad. Took it down to 14 degrees with no issues. Waaaay better than a mummy bag. I am 5'10" 200lbs and went w/ a long wide version. A little extra quilt but worth it imo.

**Edit...I also had a bivy.

Frosty, what kind of shelter did you have and did you have condensation issues when you were down near freezing?

Oh, and I just lay straight on the pad too. I thought it might be weird feeling in warmer weather where I just sleep in boxers but it wasn't bad at all.

I'm a big dude too! 6'2" 235 so need a large for sure

Definitely get the long wide. The colder it gets, the more you'll want a pad that is insulated. Not sure what the Thermarest 4 is. Seems as though the top three (or 4) lightweight insulated pads are the Xtherm, Qcore SL, Exped Synmat UL7 or Downmat. Doesn't take much cold to make your night miserable if you don't have an insulated pad.....at least for me.

I'm selling a brand new Qcore SL Long Wide pad in the Classifieds that was a warranty replacement from Big Agnes. They didn't have the L/W's in stock before hunting season so I bought an Xtherm. Used it and then the replacement showed up. Don't need both now. At least I hope I don't need both.

Colonel, I used a mountainsmith mountain lt. Condensation was pretty bad the first couple nights until I figured my bivy out. The first 2 or 3 nights the bug netting pretty much just rested above my face so I ended up breathing into it or the bivy all night. After that I staked out the top corners of the bivy and used some shock cord to hold the bug netting up off my face. Much less condensation after that.
