Quilt benefits

I love my quilt and I also hated mummy bags because I can't sleep on my back. There are several good threads on here about quilts and their pros and cons if you try to search a little.

I don't sleep on my back either and a quilt is the way to go for me. I sleep way better than I used to since switching to a quilt.

A quilt is much less restrictive and makes it easier to regulate your body heat. You save weight by not having insulation beneath you where it gets compressed and is fairly useless. They also pack smaller due to not having the "wasted" material and insulation that a bag has.

Same here. I didn't realize how much I hated a mummy bag until I started using a quilt. I sleep much better now.

Went with a quilt this year and will never go back to a sleeping bag. Getting my boys quilts since the advantages are so numerous I would feel guilty having them sandwiched inside a bag while I slept in comfort :)

I second this. Big fan of my quilts.

So, what quilts are y'all using?

I'm using one of the older EE Rev-X 20s and I'll echo all the comments you've already got above. I'm 5-9, 170# and a regular/regular works great for me. I used to love my Western Mountainerring mummy, but it was quickly demoted once I got the quilt.

I'm 5'10" and 175lbs and I use a regular size Zpacks quilt. My Rev is regular length/wide but that's because I bought it used.

I land on the sizing edge @ 6'0 200, so sizing up would be the safest? Do most like the sewn in foot box ?

Personally I prefer the zipper/cinch foot box of Enlightened Equipment's Revelation X (no longer made under this name). I just like the ability to open it up in warmer weather more like an actual quilt on your bed. Then it is really easy to kick a leg out if you are getting hot. On the flip side, if you get cold, just roll your legs up real quick.

I'd size up. I'm 6' 195 and went with a long/wide 20 revelation. I could've probably gotten by fine with a regular, but for the Minimal weight penalty for the larger size I haven't regretted the decision at all. The revelation has a zippered foot box, which is awesome. unzip it for a "true" quilt, or zip it up to wrap around the bottom of your sleeping pad and you're all set.

I'm 6'6" so hate being stuck in a cocoon. I also hate hoods (sleeping bags or otherwise). So being able to stretch out is great. I got an EE RevX 0 degree long wide. It has the zippered bottom with cinch and wraps around the bottom of my Xtherm and stays put very well. Still allows me to bend my legs and throw a leg out if I want. Can tighten it down under the pad for less draft or leave it more loose for venting. I used it in the early season this year starting in Aug and wasn't too warm or too cold. Actually woke up to snow blowing Aug 31st camped at 12k feet.

Thanks this is what I was looking for... Do people go with a colder quilt rating since they can cool down by opening? I was planning on a 20 degree rating should I go with a 0 ? Most of the time weather doesn't drop below 20-25

For me, I tend to take a warmer rated quilt and wear clothes if necessary. I have both a 30 and a 10 degree quilt. I have pretty much used the 30 degree one exclusively. Even last week when we were getting sleet and snow in Wyoming, I just wore my base layers and wool socks and I was fine in the 30 degree quilt. Granted, I am a warm sleeper so it is all personal. I just figure I am already carrying the clothes so I might as well wear them and save weight on the lighter quilt.

Everyone is different.......I got the 0 degree and always wear my merino base layers and watch cap to bed when camping......even in the summer. I guess I would say I'm a "cold" sleeper. But I have very little natural insulation on my body.:)

Thanks for the info...it sounds like temp rating is no different then a sleeping bag it's more about your personal sleep temp.
