Quiet Shell Over Chamberlin

I recently purchased a FL Chamberlin down jacket for late season hunts. I figured I could put my wool coat over it to silence my movement but the noise is still pretty evident. I’m looking for ideas on a soft shell or other outer layer that may silence the Chamberlin a bit more for late season bow hunts. It may be too much of an ask, but I’m hoping to find something that could work.

Edit:
This would be for stand hunting whitetail.

I’m no expert because I’m new to this stuff but the general consensus I have seen is that the only reason to put any shell over a puffy is for water resistance.

Seems like the puffy layer is mainly used when sitting and non-mobile for periods of time.

If they are as warm as people claim, ten you would quickly start sweating when moving especially if a wool layer is used over it.

Thanks for your input! This would be for stand hunting whitetail with a bow, so movement will be limited.

I don’t have an answer for you but I returned mine right away after putting it on. It was the loudest puffy jacket I’ve ever tried. No way would I bow hunt with it.

Maybe a fleece of some type? Size up so you’re not compressing the down too much. But if your wool coat over the top is still too loud, I’m not sure what would be quieter.

Best thing I can think of is grab a whole bunch of clothes you have laying around, rub the inside of it on the chamberlain and see what’s quietest and then maybe find something similar if that piece isn’t the right color or size for the job?

would have to be pretty huge to fit over a chamberlin. Sounds like a headache and a good way to compress the loft.

For stand hunting whitetails my chamberlin stays in the closet and a dedicated cold season whitetail parka comes with.

I do not know the chamberlain jacket so take this with a grain of salt.

I have layered shells over puffy layers for bow stand hunting in the past, the layer used was sitka stratus. I was able to get a pair of kuiu super down pro puffer pants under the stratus bibs and I was able to get a north face thermoball puffy jacket under the jacket. All sized large and all fit well on their own, but they layers fairly nicely without feeling like an exploding tick. The noise factor of the puffy layers was pretty good and I could have easily shot a deer had any shown up worth shooting.

I suspect the chamberlain is quite a bit bigger than the NF thermoball jacket tho. So this option may not work well. I recently found the first lite phase to be very quiet, but there is no way I could layer under it in similar sized large, so if you wanted to go that route you Ould need to size up probably two sizes.

Honestly, for what you are looking for, it might be better to just get a shell you can layer under and use it thru the season and layer under as needed. Hard to say.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I’m going to keep trying to trade the Chamberlin for a better archery whitetail jacket. If that doesn’t pan out I’ll dive deeper and see if there’s something fleece lined that may work as a shell over the Chamberlin. Thanks!

I’m looking into this myself right now. From everything I’ve read and watched (have spent way to much time on this) I think for people who’ve gone this route it is 50/50 if they think the down puffy under a quiet shell is too loud. That seems to depend on two things, the puffy itself (some are louder than others) and the hunters sensitivity to noise. Some hunters will not tolerate even next to no noise. I get it, especially when you put in the effort required to shoot big mature whitetails, you leave as little as possible to chance. How much noise is acceptable is situational, subjective, and experience based. If a puffy makes a crinkling noise when moving a quiet shell probably won’t help. If it is mostly noisy when rubbing against something then a quit shell likely will help.

If you are very sensitive to noise I would just fold and abandon the down puffy route. Then be prepared to pony up for something like a Sitka Fanatic or a FirstLite Thermic. If you think about it, a heavy fill puffy plus a quiet shell isn’t much less $$$, if any, than one of those options. And they are wind proof too. I don’t have an answer yet, sigh. Still figuring it out.

Beyond just the noise, there’s lots of other benefits to a more purpose built whitetails jacket. My favorite feature on the sanctuary is the hand muff pockets. Throw some heat packs in there and I don’t wear gloves hardly ever in the stand which is nice for cold season archery hunting.
