Questions about hunting elk with muzzleloaders

Good Luck with your postal problems. Once your rifle arrives call Williams sight Co. They can more than likely hook you up. I have their FP rear sights on of all my Knights.

Thank God it came today! 2 day shipping turned into 6 days but the main thing is it came.

The front of the barrel is not tapped for a front sight. I can see why this wouldn't be a good setup for open sights due to the high stock. Still deciding if I will get another stock and have it drilled/tapped for a front sight or sell it and get the regular stock version.

Glad it turned out ok with the PO. I got my package today too. Even though the tracking number said it was still in Denver. Oh well.

I'm surprised the barrel isn't drilled. It's the same barrel they use on the regular stock with open sights. It seems it would be easier to just make one barrel for all the Optima's, and use set screws to plug the holes on the TH model. Easier than making two barrels.

I can see why they stopped drilling the Accura MR for sights, because it only has one stock for it, and it's high and made for a scope.

Thanks guys, it was a big relief seeing the tracking info updated this morning. I drove straight to the P.O. and picked it up instead of waiting for it to be delivered. Didn't want to further chance it.

I think I've decided to just keep this gun and worry about my open sight issue when a CO Muzzy hunt arises. Could be next year, could be a few. No use in fretting over something so trivial. I wanted a TH stock and I'll get a lot of use out of it here in VA.

Bar - what do you think about all the stuff that was included with this gun? There are quite a few duplicates of cleaners and such and I'm sure I'll never use em all. See anything not included that would be useful? Been a while since I've used a ML.

I do plan on using blackhorn so I'll need a new breech or modify this one.

If you're going to use BH 209 you can't use any of the cleaning products. BH 209 is like smokeless powder in that you need to use the same cleaning products you use on CF guns. Black powder and the other subs use water based products to clean it up. They'll make a mess with BH 209. Good old Hoppe's 9 works good for BH 209. Use it to clean the bore and breech plug. Yes, you'll need to buy a breech plug designed for BH. CVA makes one, and Western makes one. I like the western one better. You can get it from Carlos.

I also see T7 primers. They're designed for T7 and other subs, but won't work for BH 209. It need s a much hotter primer. CCI mag, Fed, and Winchester are all good, but it has to be a primer made for shotguns, and not muzzleloaders.

Bar (aka Old Hunter) was very helpful to me getting started with muzzleloaders a couple years back. I have had great luck shooting Thors and hornady FPBs with BH209 in my CVA rifle. Only thing I'll add is why wait to hunt Colorado?!?
