Questions about gear

I was looking into a few items and was wondering what everyone uses. I need a water filtration system, a gps/satellite communicator, and a tent (won’t be sleeping in the backcountry, hiking back to the truck every night). I deer hunt in Michigan so I have all the hunting gear, was wondering if there’s anything else I might want to add to my list for a Colorado elk hunt. Thanks

I'd check out a gear list from kifarucast by Aron or a similar resource. Too much to post here honestly

Probably mountain boots.

Odds are high that whatever you're using now won't work well in extremely steep off-trail sidehilling, steep downhilling, steep climbing/kicking in.

Lots of good posts on boots on this site.

What season?

I've used just about every water purification system out there and my favorite is the platypus gravity setup.

I'd also say nice mountain specific boots...l prefer lowa, but there are numerous brands. Make sure they fit you well, and don't compromise fit for brand name.

Communicator....InReach Wouldn't leave for a trip without it!

Sawyer water filter
InReach mini for safety and communication
OnX on phone for mapping, gps, etc

Since you're truck camping; a large tent you can stand in, cook, eat, etc. May as well be comfortable. I use a large tent from Costco. Been in service for years without a hitch.

InReach explorer , Sawyer water system(camp), Grayl filer cup for my pack, cell phone with OnX for navigation.
Truck camp I use a pop up canopy over my tent entrance so when it’s raining or snowing I can get out without getting wet.
Boots are Hanwag 13 wide.

With the inreach mini, does it have all the same capabilities as the bigger model?

My brother and I are planning on doing OTC bow season. I assumed I wouldn’t want to take my knee high swamp boots into the mountains lol.

You will likely need the best optics your wallet can afford. Also a quality backpack that is capable of 100+ lb bulky loads. If you get a bull be prepared for several grueling trips getting him out. A good boning/caping knife is nice. If hunting super steep, remote country I would highly recommend trekking poles for helping get the bull out. Game bags are pretty much a necessity to keep meat free of flies plus dirt. You may need several oversized coolers to prevent boned meat from spoiling. If truck camping I often sleep in my topper. It is a mobile camp plus stay out of the wind, rain, and snow. A quality air mattress plus 0 degree sleeping bag is good.....I'm a cold sleeper.

If truck camping you like can just fill up a couple 5 gallon water jugs at a gas station rather than dealing with water purification? You will likely go through water super fast!

The best raingear $ can buy is nice...plus lots of different layers for temps in the 0 to 70 degree range. As mentioned above, comfortable boots are super important. The list goes on!

I would do a test run in the summer so you know what you are up against.....especially if hunting OTC elk! The learning curve is over the top figuring out when, where, and how! The more research and scouting you can do the better chance for success.
