You need to decide what type you want. Retrievers were bred to retrieve. If you want a low maintenance dog that does pretty well, most will work just fine. Do look into the normal health issues your breed has, and make sure it has health certifications or the parents do.
If you want a highly trained high energy dog, it's a different game. I don't think that's something to learn with. You may likely find it requires more effort to keep polish than you want unless you also plan to go hard core training or plan to hire a trainer every season.
