Cyclists do. Not every a-hole with spandex and a bike is a cyclist. There’s a difference. A true cyclist will be a positive ambassador for the sport. Entitled jerks also ride bikes and create a false stereotype. Those are just people with bikes.

2006 giant didn’t come with a single, but you know that. If the rear gears were designed for a single then sure it will work. Duh.

1x has ruled all cycling disciplines outside of road racing since the mid 2010’s. I think the wide range 1x came out for mountain in 2012 and road around 2015.

I was racing mountain on a 1x9 conversion in 2011 and Cyclocross 1x11 in 2013. Wide narrow wide chain rings, clutched derailleurs and wide range cassettes make it a great system. It also frees up your left thumb from shifting to run a dropper post or shock remote lockout.

Your advice is going from a 44ish tooth front on a three gear to a 32ish single? It sounds like you don’t ride much on blacktop, or you’re happy being really slow.

Literally, the neighborhood kid that picks up dog turds for us would suggest anyone should test drive a mountain bike with a single and a commuter bike or mountain with a triple and it’s obvious what works better.

Dude. I know you are very old but 1x ring with a 10x52t 12 gear cassette is the way to go now. My trail bike has a 32t front ring and can still do 24 mph at 80 rpm. There arent many people that have the wattage to spin XC tires at those speeds for long. I cant except for slightly (5-12%) downhill.

He wasnt asking about road bikes. And frankly I could make my big ring on my Domane work for nearly everything. I almost never drop to my small ring.

Don't forget a good tire that matches your intended use. Something aggressive like a Maxxis Minion will be awesome in the dirt and sap your energy and enjoyment on the tarmac. Lot of options for fast rolling 29er tires.

Hard to beat a steel frame hard tail 29 with a 1x11 or 1x12 gearset for a do-everything bike. While one of my gravel bikes has a 2x drivetrain its not any faster or more enjoyable that my 1x gravel bike, just has more gears I don't use. Road bikes are totally different can of worms.

This is great advice. Dont be afraid to change up tires.
The schwalbe XC tires roll pretty nice on the street. I have been happy with my racing ray front and racing ralph rear.
Alot of new mtn bikes come with straight gravity tires. They are great for going down hill but suck for any kind of mixed use.

My only wish was my cycle-commute coworker would have had the common courtesy to shower after getting to work (we had them). I could always tell when he biked to work as he smelled like a filthy goat.
