Tikka, Bergara, Sako, Winchester are all at the top of my list. I'm also in the market for a 7-08 or 308 when I finally decide which I want.

If you need some help with that decision, here’s my 2 cents.
The 308 only wins in the size of hole it delivers and maybe a little energy. Otherwise, the 7-08 delivers everything else better.

Maybe someone has a fieldcraft In 7-08 they're willing to part with. That would be my first choice

My kids fight over the ugliest guns in my safe because they've seen the tiny groups and the steaks on the plate and know the value of the tool. Ungrateful little f#$%ers are also waiting for me die so they can swipe my suppressors, times change. There's a stack of 7-08s that fit the bill, mine is an ugly ass tikka compact that shoots lights out. Buy the rifle that makes you happy right now and teach the kids and grandkids to hunt and shoot. Guns that have been gifted to me aren't my favorites because of the resale value but because they remind me of the folks who gave them to me.

I thought about recommending the Howa until he said "hand it down."

Howa makes a good rifle but personally I wouldn't hand one down to a kid - mostly because I'd be afraid of aftermarket support and gunsmith familiarity (or lack thereof) if they ever needed it.

Lot of options at that price range

I’d look hard at the Sako, Tikka, and Bergara personally

Just bought a Remington model 7 stainless composite in 7-08 new in box for $700. Might be my best best purchase during this shortage mess

I actually ended up finding a nice Model 7 stainless in an HS Precision stock shortly after posting this thread. It has an older VX-iii on right now but I have a VX-5HD on the way for it. It has quickly become my favorite deer rifle that I've owned.

In that caliber, if you want a modern looking rifle, I'd buy a tikka lite and drop it into an AG carbon fiber stock. For short to mid range shooting (most hunting ranges for the 7mm08) I like the Visigoth stock. For a longer range rifle I like the Alpine Hunter.

With Remington's horrid QC issues, couldn't pay me to take one.

Thanks. I've bought/sold/traded a bunch of guns that I never should have, just to do it. I'm now recognizing that buying quality, and something that I can pass to my kids one day, is more important than just constantly horse trading. I've never owned a Winchester but am leaning heavily towards the Extreme Weather based on comments here and elsewhere.
You can’t go wrong with them
