Pulling doubles

My situation is I have a bumper pull toy hauler. I’m considering going to a non-toy hauler 5th wheel pulling a trailer. Reason being we only take the SXS half the time. What considerations should I be looking at pulling doubles?

Title is misleading, I thought you meant two girlfriends.

I was thinking work.

On the question, there are a few states where double-trailers are a no-no. It's probably not a concern out west, but the highway patrol of the entire east coast, Washington, and Oregon would love to get an up-close-view of your rig.

Using a 5th wheel is different than a hitch pulled trailer.

Very informative.

I haven't tried fact checking with any of the states' LIS, was just going off what the RV geeks say.

We tandem pull in South Dakota. Pretty flat ground and we know our route well. Not sure I have what it takes to do it in the mountains.

I would want a camera system to see the tires on that back trailer. And I would need a much larger truck.

You can pull them in Wyoming as long as it's a 5th wheel and the total length of truck, camper and trailer doesn't exceed 85 ft.

Speaking of the back trailer, do people run anti-sway devices on them? I also thought a tandem axel on the back trailer would be a good idea in case of a blown tire.

Saw one that rolled on a downhill grade near here. Didn't look all that fun. Also a lot of the ones I see have those small cheap trailers with an ATV or UTV on them that are WAY overloaded. Small tires and axles.

My grand father used to do this all over... a few things I remember him saying is all axles have to have brakes... under 80 feet. Must have a class a license with doubles endorsement... and you gotta have total weight of rig under trucks towing gvw

I watched a boat and trailer come loose from a 5th wheel, hitch pulled away part of the frame. Boat ended up nose down in the rocks, 5th wheel was sagging in the back end. I don’t think trailer frames are designed for towing, but if you do I would definitely have them reinforced first. I have towed tandem with my motorhome, Jeep and flatbed or boat. My advantage is being able to unhook the Jeep and towed rig on rough roads or in heavy traffic.

Ya don't say? Everything we found said no. That is some good news if true. We are well under 85.
Still time to spearfish Lake Desmet this summer.

Sounds like more of a hassle and more stress than worth it. If you are looking to buy a new 5th wheel why not just buy a 5th wheel toy hauler?

That's what I would do in his case. We pull a boat behind a camper. No way around it without using two vehicles.

It’s definitely an option. I just see people pulling doubles all the time and the non toy haulers sure make good use of the space inside. I’m not completely sold on the idea of pulling 2 trailers. May definitely me more hassle than it’s worth.

Here in Colorado I see guys pulling a travel trailer (not 5th wheel) with a utility trailer with a side by side or 4wheelers behind it all the time. It’s so common I don’t think twice when I see it. I always wonder what they would do if they ever get caught in a tight spot where they can’t turn around without backing up. I have a 20’ camper and have strongly considered having a real hitch welded to the rear frame of it so I could pull a side by side on my 12’ utility trailer behind it, just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Would be so nice with two of us to not have to bring a second vehicle.
