Puffy vest?

I used a down puffy as my insulation layer this year for my WY rifle hunt. We had lots of wet snow so I wore a Mountain Hardware rain jacket as my outer layer. My down puffy got wet from my perspiration and lost its insulating ability the first day on my hike in. I replaced it with a North Face Thermoball vest and stayed much warmer. The down is more packable so I will keep it for archery hunts.

I run the uncompahgre vest. It works really well when it’s too cold to hike around in just a base and midlayer, or as an extra insulation piece under a puffy jacket when stationary or when temps drop at night at camp.

I think if I had to do it again I’d order the kelvin lite, however I don’t really have any complaints about the FL Unc.

I have the FL Uncompahgre as well and like it a lot. That said, I’ve been looking at the kuiu super down ultra vest and debating on whether I ‘need’ another vest.

I have the FL unpronounceable vest and love it as a layering item. It packs down so small that its always in my treestand pack.

I have the FL Uncompaghre and love it, the tall collor is awesome for when it’s cold

if you're not a 100% set on down, Enlightened Equipment has a really nice Apex vest- complete with a nice hood; weighs a svelte 5 oz for a size Medium, warm and Apex is much more resilient to moisture than down

I am too interested in the kuiu super down ultra. Comparisons to the kelvin kite or FL

I have the kuiu super down vest and have never found an application for it.

For stationary hunting (whitetail) it’s too loud
For western hunts with hard miles it’s not breathable
For wet hunts it’s not water proof and can lose loft
For cold weather hunts you will want a puffy with hood and sleeves

The only applications I can think of are early season archery day hunts with nice weather. It would be good for a packable insulation layer if you got an animal down and were out at night. Or, really cold temps where it’s worn beneath another puffy jacket.

I’m open to some feedback on this because it’s a nice piece, I just Can’t find a way to use it. I love vests but personally prefer to layer with synthetic or wind vests like the kuiu guide or peloton vest.

Look at the Kuiu Kenai Ultra vest. It’s synthetic but quiet, durable, lightweight, warm, and blocks the wind well.

Are you saying that the vest is just too much insulation/heavy for your hunting needs?

Yup pretty much. If I could do it again this would get the kenai vest. Much more versatile. Have the kenai jacket and it’s awesome. Can wear that thing in almost any situation

Is just too hot for your hunting? I too love vest and wear them all the time. In wyoming the wind cuts pretty deep so I love a vest at a layer especially when the temps fall into the single digits and wind chills are below. Yes they are hard to be mobile in because you get to hot and sweaty but great for slow still hunt. Qhat size do you have and how does it fit?

I consider myself a buy-once cry-once kind of guy.

Is the Stone Glacier better enough to justify the $150 more it's going to cost me than the Eddie Bauer? Is it warmer? More wind proof, quieter, more packable?

I see its 650 fill power vs 850 so seems the Stone glacier is probably warmer.

you need to look at the amount of fill- a garment with a pound of 650 fill will be warmer than a garment with a a half pound of 850 fill

3 oz of a 850 fill vs 3 oz of 650 fill will be a warmer garment

more warmth for less weight, obviously the fabric is going to influence the weight too

Thanks, I'm not too worried about the weight per se...especially with down vests where we are talking about very minimal weight differences...more so would prefer not to look like the Michelin man while staying warm :)
