Puffy Jacket/Pants

SO trying to decide between the Sitka and the Stone glacier PUFFY PANTS/JACKET Any thoughts? Stone glacier Grumman Jacket is 11.8oz and pants are 12.7 and the Sitka are Hyper down jacket is 1lb 4oz and pants are 1lb 3oz. Anyone have experience with both? Is this one thing that its worth adding a little weight( its feather right, don’t weigh much LOL) Is this. A ford Chevy thing?

Stone Glacier Grumman is on sale on euro optic. They were 150 but think they increased it to 200 if that matters.

The brand doesn't matter, get one that fits you from any good brand. My puffy jacket is from Colombia. My puffy pants are Under Armour. They fit and have good quality down in them.

The answer depends on if you’re going earlier UL stuff or late season I think. Anything Oct and later I think hyperdown, but I run pretty cold. Hard to go wrong with Grumman on multi day backpack stuff.

I have stone glacier puffy jacket and bottoms. I love them both, but the bottoms are very thin material, which makes it light, but I keep getting rips in them. This last weekend I was walking though bush and got a couple large rips. My friend was wearing black Ovis puffy pants and didn’t get any tears. I think the stone glacier are better quality, but worth looking at, especially when the black ovis ones are constantly on camofire for half off

MT_Wyatt has it right. The Sitka Hyperdown stuff is going to be much more geared towards later season very cold hunts. The Stone stuff more mid season weight that may be stretched into late season with proper sizing and more layers underneath. Both are great pieces that will serve you well.

I personally like synthetic insulation puffy pants. Pants always get ripped at some point and with synthetic you dont lose all your insulation once it rips.

Dont think you need to buy a set of only hunting specific brands. Mix and match if you need to.

Lighter and more packable for the same warmth.

As others noted, they are not terribly durable, but that matters little to me.

As far as pants go, I'd say neither. Go custom with GooseFeet Gear, you get perfect fit and only the options you want and it more than likely will be very similar in price.

Please educate me on the practical benefits of puffy pants vs. simply base layer/hunting pant. I am 60 and cannot ever recall my legs being cold on a sheep hunt. Even glassing on windy ridges I just throw on my rain pants to break the wind and am fine.

Don’t have the Sitka in question. I have owned dozens of different puffy systems. I am a gear junky and rarely stick with the same item for very long. The SG Grumman has been my go to for 3 years and I have zero plan to change it. One of the best pieces of hunting clothing that I’ve owned.

I used to just don the wind/rain pants also for those times I'm sitting/glassing..but I kinda find that to be a PIA with noise and associated body gymnastics. I'm sure I would feel similar to having to pull on puffy pants. Last year I switched to carrying a lightweight/14oz down blanket with a windstop/dwr coating. It stuffs down to nothing in my pack, super quick to pull out and really quiet to just wrap around my legs - the warmth is immediate and better than just the rain pants for sure. When it's time to move it's super quick to just unwrap and stuff in pack. No gymnastics or ruckus on the hillside changing.
It was 23 degrees and wind blowing the other morning and I was toasty and glassed for hours...might have dozed off


FWIW, This year I switched from usual coat and pants rain gear to just a big poncho. Way easier, tons more breathable.

Not very sexy from a technical gear standpoint but I'm liking the setup for real world use.

I went with the sitka 3/4 zip over puffy pants and like them. I figure that there are so many layers below my calves that the pillowy material there is more annoying than helpful. For the jacket, I looked at these in person and the kuiu but went with a packable down from Marmot - it stows in one of the jacket pockets, which is cool.
The poncho idea is interesting too, depending on temps. I have the Rumpl poncho blanket and think it has a place - for me thats about 45 degrees but maybe not when it gets down to 25 degrees, which is no problem with the marmot jacket & sitka pants setup.
