I need to add a puffy coat for my early season archery bag. My initial thought was to use my North Face coat, but the nylon outer and is loud and tends to get slapped by my bow string on release.

As I look at the different offerings, I can't find for most what the outer is made of, but they all appear to be nylon.

Anyone make a puffy that isn't a nylon outer or is that the standard?

I really like the KUIU Kenai full zip hooded puffy with zippered phone breast pocket. Super comfortable, light weight, covers a wide temp range with pit zips. The synthetic puffy insulation is warm but also breathes.

The outer shell is very soft (quite) but probably not durable enough if you are going thru brush with it all the time (stay out of catclaw!). Mine is around 5 years old and shows some wear. Been worn hiking, xc skiing and hunting quite a bit every year....for fall, winter and spring use.

I shoot my bow with the Kenai on just fine. Arms are cut to fit fairly snug.

The other option but NOT a puffy is the Peleton 240 hooded full zip jacket. It does not have pit zips or the zippered phone pocket like the Kenai. Very decent piece though with very snug arms for shooting your bow.

Lots of info on the Kenai here on Rokslide as well as KUIU's website.

What are you hunting?

For deer I don’t mess with trying to draw/shoot with a puffy and just wear heavier fleece/wool layers.

Archery elk I typically don’t have my puffy on while actively hunting, but wouldn’t be as concerned about the sound vs deer on a calm day.

When I archery hunt early the puffy is not worn very often and I rarely wear it in a shooting situation.

I have a budget friendly Decathalon puffy that I like for early season layering. Inexpensive and gets the job done!

Puffy vest may be your ticket in combination with a peloton 97 fleece or similar.

I essentially always carry a puffy for safety but early season it tends to stay in the bag almost all the time. The 97 punches way above its weight for warmth.

On the last day of my hunt last year, a storm moved in and , while I was in a canvas blind, I don't think I've ever been so cold in my life. Hence why I'm looking to carry something warmer this year. I had a Tuo jacket and it did fairly well keeping me dry from spray, but it did little good against the wind/cold.

I checked the Kuiu site and see the Peloton 240, which has been mentioned, but didn't see the 97. Maybe discontinued?

I believe the peloton 97 was discontinued.

I'll add another vote for the Kenai. Especially after the fabric breaks in a bit, it is pretty quiet.

In 5 years of CO or NM archery elk hunting from first week to last week, I have not worn my puffy outside camp, and even then, it is pretty rare. By the time it’s that cold, I’m going to bed.

Been wearing midweight fleece’s.

Just for fun, I am going to try a Kenai this year.

I hunt eastern whitetail so maybe a different use case, but if I’m stationary, I’d rather pack my fanatic in. Better suited for the purpose.

That being said, when I’m trying to cover ground still hunting, I use a merino base and keep a Jottnar Fenrir in my bag for stops and emergencies. Relatively unknown brand, but it punches well above its weight class: https://www.jottnar.com/products/fenrir-mens-hooded-down-jacket?variant=55840359776636
