Public Service Announcement: Bow Release

Plan to have backup for my elk trip but even with whitetails when I take off my release, I immediately attach it to my bow.

Don't be too hard on yourself. You could have found the same thing out a much harder way; trying to draw back on a nice buck.

Yep, it happens. If I'm in a situation where I'm far from the truck or boat I'll pack a spare release in my bag. That spare release saved my hunt once.

Careful back at camp too.

My buddy would hang his bow from a tree and then his release off the stabilizer. Been doing this for 20 plus years. Last year wakes up and no release. He was wallowing around camp thinking WTF trying to decide what to do. About a 100 yards out on my way to my pooping log I see a reflection in my head lamp and lo and behold it's his release. Apparently a squirrel had run off with it and left it in the brush. Probably never find it if the sun was up. Saved him a three hour out and back trip to town.

I now sleep with my release in the tent :)

All the forest critters pitched in and paid that squirrel to run some interference! 😂😂😂

If I take it off, I strap it to my bow so I know I'll have it with me later! I do keep a backup in the truck though as well. I've forgotten tons of things, to include my rifle when a kid hunting. I know have mental checklists!

Yeah, always carry a back up. Haven't done it with a release yet, but it'll happen eventually. I've walked away from a bugle tube and a few other things, stuff happens. Worst one I've heard of was a guy my dad was guiding for a few days. The guy walked off to take a dump, hung his binoculars up on a tree limb, did his business, and walked back to where they had been glassing. 15 years later, we both to a quick look through that stand of aspens to see if there's a pair of Swarovskis laying on the ground or hanging in a tree.

Well thanks for all the wisdom and ideas. I took the advice posted here and picked up two identical releases over the weekend. Going to keep one on me, and keep the other buried in the pack in case of emergencies.

(Fingers crossed that this was a one-time dumbass moment...)
