Why every Hunter should own a Ptarmigan Down Jacket from SKRE

Hunting is as much about surviving the elements, as is it about punching a tag. We don't wake up each morning of a hunt and think about survival, we our focused on successfully harvesting an animal and enjoying the process leading up to that event.

However, subconsciously we know high quality gear allows us to extend our time in the field, thus increasing our chances of success. If you can't maintain core temperature, it's going to force you back to the warm safe confines of camp. If you are miles from camp, and don't have that option, a drop in core temperature can lead to hypothermia and eventually death. If you find yourself miles from camp in a hypothermic or pre-hypothermic situation, you may not have the mental focus, energy, or fortitude to construct a fire. If the fuel surrounding you is damp, that further hinders your ability to create a flame. There are to many variables to building a successful fire that will ensure your survival.

My insurance policy for maintaining core temperature is a lightweight compressible down jacket. Decades before founding SKRE, I became a convert of down gear. Over the years I have owned multiple down sleeping bags and jackets. The most impressive quality of down is its ability to provide warmth without a lot of weight. Not just warmth, but a lot of warmth. If you've ever watched waterfowl floating effortlessly in frigid water in the dead of winter, you can begin to realize the benefits of down. Dawning a down jacket is the equivalent of wrapping a down sleeping bag around your torso. Even more impressive, down can compress to a fraction of it's size and in minutes, return to its original shape.

SKRE's Ptarmigan Ultra Down Jacket comes with a compression sack and stuffs down to the size of a Nalgene bottle, and weighs a whopping 13 ounces, occupying very little space and weight in your pack. The Ptarmigan Jacket is crafted using premium white goose down treated with Teflon shield DWR to ensure protection against moisture. The exterior of the Ptarmigan is built using rip stop Nylon treated with Teflon shield DWR providing an additional water resistant barrier. This is 13 ounces of warmth that could save your life, and better yet, keep you warm and comfortable on that windy ridge as you glass for the trophy of a lifetime.

How thick is the nylon face fabric? I can't find the info anywhere. Like is it 10D or 15D or ?

I believe I read somewhere that it is 20D? Not positive but I have the jacket and the material feels much more substantial then the SG Grumman, which uses 15D.

$230 for 5.2 oz of 850 FP down in a 15 oz package is actually amazing.

For comparison the kuiu superdown pro is 5 oz of 850 FP down in a 13.4 oz package at $399.

I’d take the skre all day every day unless I have f**k you money.

I have the hooded version of the ptarmigan. As someone who is really skinny and has always gotten cold, I can't believe I never had a puffy before. After october 1st its in my pack every trip. Its surprising how warm it is, but it still fits under my outer layer, which isn't a loose fit.

Very satisfied with my purchase.
