Proud dad moment

I am fortunate that my wife’s family are farmers and get a significant amount of depredation doe tags every year. This year I headed out for the last day of primitive season and passed on a young 8pt. The next morning was opening rifle season. I doubled up on two does within 5 minutes of each other. With the pressure of getting some meat in the freezer off, I took my son (4) with me on my evening hunt. He loves camping and squirrel “hunting” with me and I had been talking to him for the past couple months about going deer hunting. My hopes weren’t high as I’ve never heard him be quiet before. Boy was I wrong. He was the quietist he’s ever been. He talked almost the entire time but in a whisper. He ended up falling asleep while eating snacks. When the deer started coming out, I woke him up, put on his ear muffs, and doubled up again on two yearling does. He and I were both stoked.

I took him out with me again last night. He took a nap, ate some snacks, and we put another mature doe in the freezer. I didn’t expect to be this successful opening weekend, but for him to be with me was the icing on the cake.

My wife is due in May with our first. Having a little girl. Really hoping pink nail polish in some hunting pictures is my future.

One of my daughters has to have a camo bow in her hair whenever shes hunting and the other doesn't. But the camo bow daughter has graduated and has a great job in medical field and wants to book a moose hunt.So thats what we are planning now.Best part is shes paying.It's gone a long ways from coloring books and snacks.

Wait are you saying that your boy killed one of those bucks or was with you? If its the first, what state do you live/hunt that kids can start hunting that young? Cause that is awesome.

I'm a young dad, my kids are only 10 and 6, and I do try to really get some lasting consistent experience before forming and certainly sharing an opinion, but I think I'm ready to share this: those longer duration pieces of 1 on 1 time are really valuable for parent/child relationships. They enable long drawn out deep conversations. Conversations that can sometimes last days. An example, my 6 y/o daughter really has an affinity for animals, to the point where she is becoming uncomfortable eating them. We just went hunting for a few days together and got to really work through her ideas. By Sunday afternoon we were standing over a dead deer and taking him apart and she couldn't wait to get home and eat some. I do expect this topic (her meat reluctance) to come up again, but just wanted to state the 1 on 1 time is probably more important than we already think it is.

Kansas has no age restrictions for kids. I could take an infant deer hunting and have them pull the trigger. There's some good memes on this topic.

I'm in Kansas and my daughters both harvested their first deer and turkeys when they were 8. Some kids aren't ready then but they had been going with me since they could walk.That is if you don't count before they were born and wife was carrying them.

Man, Utahs is 10 I believe and I have always said that most of the dads here take their kids hunting so they can live vicariously through them. I cant imagine what it could be like with no age limit. I always hated it when dads would come in to get a gun for their kids because he/she drew the youth only elk tag and the dad would talk about how they were going to make them hold out for a big elk. I asked a couple "why, so you can post picture on YOUR Instagram and all YOUR buddies like it?"

Still really cool that you can get your kids out whenever they are ready and want to go.

Here in Virginia and West Virginia as well i dont think there is a "minimum" age, they are considered youth hunters until they are 15
