The 22" 280AI Proof Research barrels on a Savage 110 Ultralites are 1in9 twist. But, if you go to buy a 22" 280AI barrel blank from Proof Research they only offer it in 8 or 8.4 twist.

If they know the 8 or 8.4 is best for 280AI in a 22" barrel,, why make it 1in9 for the factory rifle?

I wish it was in a 1:8 twist. Lots more options then. But at least its a 1:9 and not a 1:9 1/2 like lots of other factory barrels

I wonder if they're sourcing cheaper blanks from other mfr's for the Savages.

It was like a year ago when I was looking into the 110 ultralite I actually called proof to ask about the barrel on that rifle. Barrels are their blanks. It is the same as all the barrels they make. Only difference is the barrel contours, lengths, and twist are specific to savage and what they wanted. My guess is that the twist rate thing that you are noticing is also the request of savage to be the 1:9. If you look at all savage models in 280 ackley on their website they are a 1:9.

8.4 or 9 are both ideal

Savage wanted it that way. Likely having to do with Saami specs.

Unfortunately, factory rifles are mostly made to cater to the masses, shooting factory ammo, which is frustrating at times when some company builds an almost perfect rifle… but too slow of a twist
