Probably the biggest black bear skull of all time

I skinned this bear and cleaned this skull myself.

It's a bit of a complicated story about how it was shot. It has never been entered into any record book. It is however 23.5" B&C which beats anything in the book today.

14.5" ( a bit more actually) long with calipers or using blocks, I am an official scorer so I know precisely how to do this proper

It's a hair over 9" wide, but not dried 90 days yet, so should shrink just a bit to 9" wide

This is without question the biggest black bear ever measured. It was over 800 pounds and squared almost 9 foot. It did not fit in a front end loader bucket.

Seriously that is impressive...was this an East coast bear or something. I hear the Carolinas and PA get some monster bears!

Is it not a 60 day drying period? As an official measurer would you not know this detail?

Ever measurer I have met would have expressed the final score in 16ths of an inch

And as an official measurer, would you not know that if this bear is indeed 23 8/16" it would place it in 3rd place?

well the pic is off a California forum but the "did not fit in a front loader bucket" comment sure sounds mid west/east coast bear hunting to me. where they shoot them out of corn fields. how else do you think a black bear gets to 800 pounds. the "complicated story" line would probably be just better left out, smells of internet trolling when you add little comments like that

There are lots of ways to state the rules and regulations for record books

B&C SCI P&Y. Not all have the same regulations it's why I did not specify any entry book. They do all measure the same, but from there the regulations differ as to weapon and drying time etc.

As far as records B&C will accept a picked up skull from the bush, SCI And P&Y require entries to have been legally harvested. So even though there is in fact a larger entry, it was a pick up in Utah by a fellow that found the skull in the mountains. There are a couple others in the 23" range from PA but they were taken by F&G and by an illegal harvest.

So neither would be accepted in two of the three book entries. Of course B&C will accept any skull not only those legally harvested.

So what club are you an official measurer for? All three you listed require a 60 day drying period.....

SCI allows picked up trophies to be entered, but are marked as such......

B&C will not allow poached animals to be entered as you commented above.


I'm not saying its not a great bear, just your comments make things hard to believe as there are many holes in your story.

I own these pictures, I took these pictures and they have never been posted on any California forum. They were taken with film, not digital nobody has seen them on the internet before this, unless they were stolen somehow from me without my knowledge!

The hunter can share his adventure if he chooses, it's not my place. I thought ...... I guess stupidly, that you guys would like to see the actual potential of great genetics diet and habitat. It's nothing more than a great natural history example take it for that value alone.

Kind of a same, because I also have a 31" +Brown bear, 30" + polar bear, 16- 5/16" cougar a skull from a 14' alligator, a a 700lb wild boar from Russia, all the photos here I would have loved to share them all with you guys. But why? Because I'm " trolling" wow, I'm speechless from this reaction!

No one is doubting the actual score of the bear skull and I for one appreciate you posting it up. But not unlike a recent thread on here that encouraged guys to post up their actual experiences when reviewing a product, people are going to no doubt ask some questions when a post as vague as yours comes up.

Regardless thats a phenomenal bear and if you don't want to share anymore details, totally cool... Just expect a bit of speculation. Sorry man that's the way these forums work and even Rokslide isn't immune to it.

With that said, can you tell us if this was "Western USA" bear or an Eastcoast bear or even an Alaskan bear? And I assume it was a legal harvest since you stated the only larger entries were "pickups"... of course this is just speculation

I owned custom osteo for over 20 years. I processed 1000's of skulls and scored entries by the hundreds. It's how I have photos of countless magnificent trophies. Never really considered, I would be treated as a witness on the stand in court for a simple internet post. Writing a casual post and including some pictures is typically a fun, amusing and often educational part if these forums.

The bear was from Alaska, it was a nuisance bear darted tagged weighed and released to a remote location. Unfortunately the size was so off the charts the media and many guides dug into the process and decided to Actively hunt this bear. When it was learned where it was released. That release site being given out was a problem with AK F&G. That is a weird situation which is why I said if any more details of this need to be shared the hunter can do it himself. It was a legally harvested bear when it was shot.
