For everybody feeding PPS, are you guys seeing an increase in weevils and larvae in your dog food? I’ve noticed them before, but the last several bags have been getting nasty. Ingestion is supposed to be harmless, but for $100/bag, I’m expecting a little better quality control by Purina. I’ll post a short video.

$100 per bag seems crazy expensive. How long does it last? Here in Alberta my wife and I spend about $230-250 per month to feed our two golden retrievers a raw diet.

$100usd is like $175CAD lol

It’s not a purina problem it’s the distribution problem of how it’s stored. This was all over a few weeks ago in the retriever world.

That being said I feed kinetic and it worked better for my dog than proplan. Some pros I know have switched over and really like the results.

I bought a bag from a farm supply store a few years ago that had bugs. I found a hole in the bag.

It wasn't Purina's fault. It is a pretty sturdy bag. Now I check them over before I store them in the pantry.

I called, or maybe I emailed, Purina and they sent me coupons enough to cover 2) 50 lb bags. I was satisfied with that.

That’s one thing you can’t question about purina their customers service is top notch and no one does more to support dog games. Even though I don’t feed their food I will never run them down good people their.

Wow! I've been feeding our pack of three PPS for years, and have not noticed any bugs in their food. I'm in Idaho though, perhaps the distribution network is considerably different.

Yeah I feed my crackhead this stuff too. Will have to check when I get home as I just bought a new 50lb bag yesterday. I didn’t see anything noticeable when I transferred from the bag to her feed container.

Thanks for the heads up.

I will give Purina a call and see what their take is. I typically buy mine from Bomgaars and Menards, and didn’t notice the bugs until the last 6 months or so. I don’t buy damaged bags, and from what I’ve read these are weevils, but they also get pantry moths and larvae in their food. Neither will hurt your dog, but just pretty gross for an expensive product. Thanks for all the feedback, and @KurtR i’ll look into Kinetic as well.

I notice that issues with insects on this thread seem to be primarily with 50 pound bags. I've always bought 33 pound bags of PPS, and I notice the largest bags don't seem to sell as quickly at PETCO. Perhaps the bulk bags are in storage longer because there is less demand, giving the larvae time to hatch?

Had this issue with a bag we had a few weeks ago. Wife contacted Purina and they told her to go back to where we bought the food, and they refunded us and we got a new bag. Everyone was super good to work with, just kinda odd that it happened out of nowhere after years of buying their food.

Yeah except when I bought my 50lb bag a couple days ago it was only 3$ more than the 33lb bag. It’s not always that price but for me I wasn’t paying 85$ for 33lb bag when the 50lb was 3$ more. Freaking dog food prices are crazy.

33 is usually high 70s to low 80s, and 50 pounder is high 80s to low 90s. The big bag is a better value IME as well.

Yep, big bag is more economical for sure. I've been getting the 33 pound ones because they fit in our dog food storage tub and they are easier to wrangle.
